For some time there has been a source of confusion for many Christians concerning Paul’s comment in 2 Timothy. I hope I can properly place it in perspective.
Paul says: *“Remember that Jesus Christ of the seed of David was raised from the dead according to my gospel…”*2 Tim 2:8
Why would Paul say “My gospel?” He explained that in Galatians 1:11-12 that he did not learn the gospel from any man, but was taught it *“…by the revelation of Jesus Christ.” *This was the “ascended” Lord Jesus Christ who revealed the mystery of the gospel to Paul. It was called a mystery because no one knew it before; it had been a secret.
But let’s look at the gospel that John the Baptist, Jesus, John, Peter and the other apostles taught. They preached the gospel of the kingdom to the people of Israel only. This good news was that the kingdom, as promised in the Old Testament, was ready to come. All that had to happen was that the entire nation of Israel had to repent and the kingdom would have come at that time. Right away. The message was: “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” (Matthew 3:2, 4:17, 10:7) After the resurrection, the kingdom was still offered to Israel again in Acts 3:19-21 if they would only repent as a nation. “Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord; And he shall send Jesus Christ, which before was preached unto you: Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began.”
Israel would not do so and the kingdom was postponed and God called Paul and made him “the minister of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles.” (Romans 15:16 and “the apostle of the Gentiles.?" (Romans 11:13) Therefore Paul was made “our apostle.” Not Peter or any other.
Peter’s gospel was to Israel only. On the day of Pentecost the Holy Spirit was given and in Acts 2:126-21, Peter said, “… this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel; And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy: And I will shew wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke: The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and notable day of the Lord come: And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
