Ok, i want to learn Italian. So i want to start getting used to hearing the language around, so i’m like watching movies with a lot of italian in them and all, it’s just a little preperation i’m doing. I was wondering if i could say memory prayers like the Lord’s Prayer and the Hail Mary in italian, even though i don’t know the exact translations for all the words. I mean i obviously know the over all meaning of the prayers because i know them in english so i know pretty much what they mean and i’ve taken three years of spanish so i can recognize a lot of the words. So can i say the prayers in italian? I realize this is hard to understand but i’m have trouble finding words to say what i want to say. Thanks for the answers.

I know what you meant, and I would say it is fine but hope that you will soon understand each of the words because it helps you focus and put all your mind into each of the words you pray.

I too had to memory Our Father, Hail Mary when praying. English is not my first language, and it takes me sometimes to understand every word from the two prayers. 🙂 Every now and then, when praying with the rosary, I use bilingual or whichever to make me focus more. 😃

Even if we pray in English, none of us truly understood it all when we were kids. Even adults, not all of us understand the true meaning of the prayer Our Father. As we grow physically/spiritually, and with the graces of God, we understand it more.

Well, English is not my mother tongue either, but I came back to the Church in the US, so I relearned some prayers in English, such as Hail Holy Queen, and found out that I still remembered others in Portuguese, such as the Apostle’s Creed. Some prayers I know in both languages, such as the Our Father.

I found out that as English is a monosyllabic language, my Rosary can be about 20% faster if said in English. But I find that some prayers in Portuguese were better translated from Latin, so my Rosary can be a checkerboard of languages.

Strangely enough, I often praise God with spontaneous exaltations in English. :ehh:

:blessyou:
