Are there different schedules of Bible Readings for Mass. The reason I ask this is because I have an Android app on my phone called Catholic Bible & one feature is Daily Mass Readings. I’ve noticed that sometimes the readings in this app are different to what we read at Mass. Today, Pentecost Sunday, was one example where they didn’t match up. I have a Microsoft app on my laptop called The Catholic Collection & that has the same readings that we read at Mass. I just wondered if there were different reading schedules used in different parts of the world because I always thought the Mass Bible Readings were the same the world over.

What readings did you have? There are Vigil readings for Pentecost. I don’t know what translation you use in Tasmania but here is a link to the various readings for the USA.

Of the two apps, the Microsoft app is likely to be the more correct. Microsoft markets worldwide and has more staff, so they are more likely to take the time to make sure you have the right readings.

With respect to the Catholic Bible app, it could be one of several things:
  • App is not using the version of the Bible you use in Australia (if the readings are similar but use different language)
  • App has a mistake in it and is pulling up the wrong reading
  • App is using an alternate first or second reading which is available only for some vigil Masses for Pentecost, to my knowledge

Aha!!! I just rechecked my phone app & when I scroll further there are the 2nd lot of readings whereas the 1st ones are for the vigil.
Silly me… 😊

Thanks for your replies everyone. 👍
I got it wrong, see my reply to SMHW
for other times it’s been different maybe they were alternate readings as “Tis Bearself” pointed out.

some countries follow the Jerusalem Bible , USA, I think, follow the NAB , some diocese in new Zealand follow the latest Version RSV

This thread reminded me of my own experience/expectations, so perhaps it’s something not limited to apps. I used to have a missalette for the Ordinary Form of the Mass and was excited when I found it. However due to all the options that that form can have, in the end I found it so rarely able to be used, I stopped using it.

I’m glad the OP got a clarifying answer. 🙂

As it turns out, for Pentecost, there are different readings for the Vigil and for Mass on Pentecost day.

To make it even more confusing, potentially, there are two options for the Vigil Mass: a solemn form (with four readings before the epistle!) and a simple form (with the normal number of readings). The celebrant has the option to choose the form he wishes to celebrate.

So… there’s room for options. (You’ll find this on weekdays, too: when it’s a memorial for a saint, there are times when the readings may be chosen between the saint’s day Mass and the ordinary day’s Mass.)

Umm… you realize that Microsoft doesn’t write all the applications that run on Windows, right? Just like Google doesn’t write all the applications that run on Android (and appear in the Play Store)!

So… the fact that it’s a Windows app really doesn’t say anything about the validity of the data it presents… 😉

Ummm…The poster called it a “Microsoft app”. They did not say “app I bought from the Windows store.” I suppose I should have looked up the actual app to see who wrote it before I said anything. Large software companies do often write apps, or pay others to write them, or purchase the rights to apps already written. And yes, I am well aware how “app stores” work because I currently work for one of the large software companies.

Have a nice day.

Right. As contrasted with “Android app.”

Yes, of course they do.

But… did you really think that Microsoft had written a ‘Bible app’ or marketed one?
Have a nice day.
You too! 👍
