Why are there many Protestant denominations? I mean, there’s Presbyterian, Methodist, Baptist, Lutheran, etc.!! What’s so different about them?
Good question! Causes confusion, eh? That is why I think it is obvious that there should be one Church. One Christian Church. One Universal Church - hey, isn’t that what the Catholic Church was meant to be? I mean before people protested after over 1500 years of having a “united” Christian Church referred to as Catholic. Why are there many Protestant denominations? There are many factors, but one that plays a part is the question of the authority of Holy Scripture. Why are there many Protestant denominations? I mean, there’s Presbyterian, Methodist, Baptist, Lutheran, etc.!! What’s so different about them?
Speaking as one Protestant, I’d say there are two aspects. One is, as others have pointed out, that once we separated from Rome there was little to keep us together, so that it was easy for every dispute to result in a new church. The other side I’d like to point out is that this division (tragic as it is) has produced a rich diversity of Christian belief and practice. If you allow yourself to appreciate some of the forms of devotion Protestants have produced–Lutheran chorales, Wesleyan hymns, ecstatic Pentecostal worship, clear-thinking Calvinist sermons–you may come to see our diversity in a more positive light. That doesn’t excuse schism, but it does raise the question as to whether all the blame is ours.
I agree about the diversity or about things that Protestants have to offer the Body of Christ (The Church), but many of the good things would be more prevalent in the community of Catholic, if we were all under one tent. Know what I mean. We are all sinners and the sins of Catholic naturally damages the Church as it would any denomination.
We would claim that the See of Rome has chosen to exclude much that is legitimately Christian, so that certain forms of piety have only been able to bloom outside your communion. My own attempts to become Catholic have served to convince me of this. It’s hard to pin down, but for someone who’s experienced grace in Protestantism there is something lacking in Catholicism–just as there is much good in Catholicism that is lacking in all forms of Protestantism.
We would be lacking less if the pious people stayed in the Church and continued to speak out against wrong doing by the people of their parish instead of leaving the Church entirely. I would like to see the day that people fix what is wrong with the Catholic Church (meaning the parishioners do wrong) instead of abandoning the Church which I believe was founded by Jesus Christ.
Please understand that I am not claiming, as some Protestants claim, that denominationalism is a good thing. At most it’s a necessary evil. And I’m not convinced of its necessity. But neitehr am I willing to say that everything about Protestant diversity is bad. I would not want the only manifestations of Christianity to be those currently found in communion with Rome. That would be a cure worse (if possible) than the disease.
I don’t know my Church History enough, but I am sure those in the Catholic Church are partly to blame for the divisions. I know that in the present day, we, Catholics, are to blame for some very “holy” people leaving the Church or not entering it. However, The Church guided by the Holy Spirit with the Pope as our Shepherd is good and holy and right in its teachings. People just don’t live their faith as they should. Sin is why we are divided. Sins of Catholics as well as sins of Protestants. That is my view. Division seems to me to be a useful tool used by Satan. United we Stand, divided we fall kind of thing, but we know we will prevail because the Bible tells us this. However, we struggle greatly because of sinfulness of man, don’t we? I’d like to invite you in to the Catholic Church to be a voice against wrong doing at your particular parish. We desperately need people who will stand up for what is right.
In Christ,
Edwin
So, just wondering if you have this opinion about protestant churches, what is holding you back from becoming Catholic?in addition, it is my understanding (which is admittedly limited as my knowledge of church history is zilcho) that different ‘movements’ produce different denomination. You get a glob of people all worked up over something and suddenly it becomes a denomination, somtimes with its main focus on one particular bit of doctrine (like no pants for women, or no music in the church) or whatever.
so yeah. there have been some good responses, especially about the private interpretation. if the holy spirit is leading 3 different people and they all come up with 3 different interpretations that conflict each other…either it’s not the holy spirit, or the holy spirit contradicts himself, or all Christians are just nuts. So yes, many by private interpretation and several by ‘movements’ such as Azuza Street of the early 20th century and such.
I’m a protestant by the way

No, I don’t care a bit to elaborate. I’m looking into Catholicism which is one reason why I’m here. I’m very curious (hence my name). Whether I ever convert or not, I have no idea, but I’ve not been able to shake this obsession of mine for awhile. I was here a lot back in the summer but then dumb school started and pulled me away. I’m trying to get back to these boards and get started up again.Try not to be too harsh. Just wondering if it has crossed your mind or not.
