My husband and I are thinking about switching to NFP. Currently I am on BC for an ovarian cyst condition so we have not had to really concern ourselves with real fertility awareness.
However the longer I have been on BC the guiltier I have felt about it because I truly feel its wrong (although it morally acceptable in my case i still can’t help feeling guilty ). I’ve also had the most annoying side effects SERIOUS weight gain, gallstones(which resulted in having to remove my gallbladder, nausea, i have completely lost my sex drive (which is just wrong I am a very young wife who should be enjoying intamcy with here husband and I don’t, I hate it!) and to top I STILL GET CYSTS THAT HURT LIKE YOU WOULD NOT BELIEVE…so long story short I think I’m giving up on BC, I fail to see how its helped and i want something I feel better about …which brings me to my question

What type of NFP do you all like and find to work the best?? where can I get more info?? as well as any other advice you could offer : )

ccli.org sympto-thermal method
nfpandmore.org sympto-thermal method
creightonmodel.com/ standardized mucous observation
boma-usa.org mucous observation

We learned NFP through CCLI (couple to couple league) years ago and still use it when we need to space babies. It will take your cycles a bit to regularize after being on the pill.

God bless,
Jennifer

learn more than one method an evaluate which is likely to work best for you. We found the Billing Method best since DW has very readable mucus. But it DOES have the downside of needing you to avoid meds that mess up your mucus. If you have frequent sinus problems, this could make life awful for you (no Sudafed!).

I use Creighton. Love it.

They all work well, but for my schedule and lifestyle temp taking at the same time every day is not for me. I like Creighton a lot, and after learning STM first and then Creighton I find Creighton much easier and more straightforward-- but that’s a personal preference. They are all effective.

Just to add another perspective, I used Billings Ovulation Method (external mucus sign only) for a little over ten years. It was simple, but I often found my mucus sign hard to read. Switching to sympto thermal gave me the added confidence of cross-checking my mucus sign with temperatures. An excellent primer on sympto thermal NFP is Toni Weschler’s Taking Charge of Your Fertility. (I ignore her reccomended use of barriers during the fertile period. After all, that’s when they’re least likely to be effective.)

It took a bit of effort to work daily temperature taking into my mornings, but I don’t find it necessary to take temps. every day now that I’m more familliar with the system. Learning about a couple methods probably is your best bet.

I have PCOS and i have found creighton to be a fantastic method even though I am not married! I was put on the pill by my GP but did not have much success. I went to one appointment with a creighton nurse and found out so much about my condition I couldnt’ believe that my GP had not advised me! Seriously, spacing pregnancy aside, creighton will help you sort out your cycles and actually deal with the problem - not just disguise the symptoms as the pill does.

Check out all the links already posted. All will work well for avoiding/achieving pregnancy. You can check out each and there are lots of people on here who can tell you the reasons behind their preferences.

Because of the medical problem you’ve been experiencing, I HIGHLY recommend Creighton. There is an entire science that has developed out of its use and the medical consultants can help you with your ovarian cysts.

I have PCOS…I went to an NFP only doc (who will not prescribe BC no matter what)…because it is terrible for the body.

ABC only masks the symptoms, it does not treat the cause.

My docs use Creighton to check how I’m doing…including evaluating progesterone.

If you have a hard time obseriving, that could mean there is another problem (for me it was a cervical aversion)…I had a procedure and it fixed that prob too.

I learned the sympto-thermal method from Couple to Couple League, www.ccli.org. I like the temperature cross-check because I find my mucus sign hard to interpret. Just so everyone knows, CCL is in the process of revising all their books and teaching materials to make them more visually appealing and to simplify their method. There’ll be just one “rule” now, I hear, instead of three or four different “rules” for different days of elevated temps and drying up mucus. I look forward to this simplification.

By the way, Lila Grace, definitely try to get your gynecological problems FIXED, not just cover up the symptoms with artificial birth control. The Pill makes cycles LOOK normal on the surface, but they don’t find or fix the underlying cause. Maybe check out NaPro Technology? They specifically address ovarian cysts.

Hopefully, learning and using natural methods can help you find a cure, or at least an improvement in less pain. Is this something that could be helped with better nutrition, perhaps? Check out Marilyn Shannon’s Fertility, Cycles, and Nutrition.

**Hmmm, from St. Louis, and goes to an NFP only doc?? Me thinks we may have the same doc:) **

Well, mine is Dr. D, but I would trust Dr. G with anything, because I know his philosophy.

and I my general doc is also NFP only, along with my ENT. 🙂

**so is your general doc another dr. d?? i just had a baby 8 weeks ago and dr. d and dr.g were BOTH out of town just days beforehand and believe me, I was freaking out at having a different doc other than them deliver. thankfully baby waited til dr d got back…sorry didn’t mean to derail the thread…

carry on…**

Whatever method you use, find a good teacher who can help you interpret your results. I can’t stress this enough. I had massive ovarian cysts that made my results very murky (I never had the big temp spike, it would go up slightly and then go back down; I also only once noticed fertile mucus in months of checking). The thing is, I didn’t know that I had the cysts, I just thought I was having trouble figuring out what was going on with my body. Having a teacher to guide us vs. doing this on our own would have helped tremendously! Good luck!!

As you already found out, BCP do NOT treat ovarian cysts!!! They only cover up the symptoms, and leave the problem there to keep coming back.

I have PCOS and use Creighton. Because of the wacky hormone levels caused by the PCOS, temps do me no good. I stay around 96 every day. BUT, using cervical mucus as a fertility indicator still works. As others have said, get a good teacher. Either check out www.popepaulvi.com or good Creighton method, and you can locate a teacher. Good luck! 🙂
