I’m just curious about this 🙂

why is it that different orders of nuns have different veils…some cover more than others… for example, compare Carmelites and Poor Clares to many of the other orders ?

does that depend on whether they’re contemplative or ‘active’, or cloistered/uncloistered?

I’ve just always wondered this! lol! anyone know?

The religious habit is the physical “manifestation” of the charism–the physical expression of the founders’ vision for the order.

There have been so many different habits through the two millenia that the Church has been in existence, but the habits as we know them are mostly the result of the French Revolution.

I host a yahoo group on the topic:

Some habits were adapted from what the local peasants wore. This is especially true in the case of the white-winged Daughters of Charity.

But in answer to your question–the Poor Clares wear the wimple and veil, and the Carmelites wear the toque.

Blessings,
Cloisters
