Different Vestments for one Cardinal Conclave 2013

As I was watching the procession of voting Cardinals to Conclave 2013, I noticed one was wearing vestments that were completely different from the others. He was wearing black, and I believe the vestments were trimmed in red. His headgear was also round and black and red. Can anyone tell me who he was, and why his vestments were so different?

I believe the reference is to Mor Basilious Cleemis, Major Archbishop/Catholicos of the Syro-Malankara Church. He was named Cardinal-Priest by PP Benedict XVI on 24 November of last year.

Yup. Eastern patriarchs are entitled to wear the clerical garb proper to their own Eastern churches.
 
One interesting thing I have learned about our new Pope is that he was Ordinary in Buenos Aires (all Argentina?) for all Eastern Catholics who did not have an Ordinary of their own.

From living in SA I know that there are Eastern Catholics there but not in any great numbers so I imagine that he was regularly if not frequently called upon to assist them.

That reminds me: Cardinal Bergoglio / Pope Francis is not the only person to be recently promoted from a see in Buenos Aires to the head of a church! In 2011, Archbishop Sviatoslav Shevchuk, who had been the Ukrainian Catholic eparch in Buenos Aires, was elected Archbishop of Kiev and Major Archbishop (the big cheese) of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church.

His Beatitude is turning 43 in May and will have a red hat by the end of the year. And what have I done with my life? 🙂
