Differing Religions, Which is True?

In an apologetics class I went to, the priest tried to prove God’s existence by using the apostles as an example: many of them died and we’re executed in horrible ways, and that they wouldn’t die for something they didn’t truly believe in. But many different religions are also ready to die for their beliefs. So this doesn’t prove God’s existence. Can anyone give me solid proof?
 
Depends on what you mean by solid proof. Most “proofs” also require a bit of faith.

For instance, how do you know your date of birth? Do you have proof? Even if you have your parents’ testimony, and a birth certificate, how do you know that those pieces of evidence are trustworthy? It’s because you have faith in the people who are telling you, or faith in the people who made out the birth certificate.

So when it comes to religion, you won’t necessarily find an absolute, scientific proof. But there are proofs that can be given which may require a little faith, just like your DOB.

When examining proofs for religion, you then have to assess whether the witnesses giving you the proof are trustworthy. That is where the priest’s bit about the martyrdom of the Apostles comes into play. Lots of people die for things that are not true. But nobody dies for what they KNOW to be untrue. That is why the testimony of the Apostles is so compelling. They definitely weren’t lying. But were they merely deceived? Not at all, but I can save that one for next time; I hope I’ve given you a good starting point for now.

If you truly believed Christ was resurrected from the dead, would you believe? Nothing but the Resurrection of Christ accounts for the changed life of the apostles. When Jesus was arrested and crucified, the apostles became afraid. Most went into hiding. Peter even denied knowing Christ - three times! Only one apostle stood at the foot of the Cross, John. The others were afraid they, too, might be arrested.

However, after Christ’s Resurrection and appearance to the apostles, they established their Church right there, in Jerusalem, in the midst of the danger, and went about proclaiming the gospel of the Lord. What accounts for this 180 degree turnaround, almost overnight? Nothing but the Resurrection of Christ, and later, his ascension into heaven.
 
What year is this? 2015 AD, or Anno DOMINI. No one can legitimately deny that He was here. In fact, they changed the way they measure time because of Him. when you combine those facts with all the psalms and prophesies from the Old Testament about Him which came true, it is hard not to believe.

I would say that the best evidence for God’s existence is His revelation through figures such as Abraham, Moses, the other prophets of Israel and, of course Jesus Christ.

One can recognize and know God through these divine revelations of truth. Or one can reject them. But they are, in fact, the foremost proof of the reality of God who knows us and loves us and will never abandon us to ourselves.
 
I don’t know if it was lack of clarity on the priest’s fault, or an error in communication… but usually the argument about the apostles is framed a little differently. As you said, people of many religions are willing to die for their faith: Islamists, Christian martyrs, even adherents non-religious ideologies like Marxist guerillas.

However, only the apostles were in a position to die for something they knew to be true or false. A Muslim or Christian today may be willing to die for what they believe; the apostles were willing to die for what they knew and saw firsthand. It’s a strong argument against them “inventing” the Resurrection, either for personal gain or some other reason.

I think it’s a strong argument either for the existence of God or for the invention of Christianity. But what did the apostles gain if they did, indeed, “invent” Christianity? Nothing but pain and misery. Some people are masochists, to be sure, but a group that large? I would doubt it. And, when given the chance to save their lives by recanting their beliefs, none of the apostles ever did, recant that is. They affirmed their faith in Christ. The Boston Marathon bomber tried to get out of the death penalty by saying his older brother had undue influence on him. He really wasn’t willing to die for his beliefs. I know, that is just one isolated case.
 
What about from Natural Law point of view? We men want to be happy, but all things on Earth gives us limited or finite happiness. Then who or what is infinite, eternal and limitless? God, of course. God is the infinite happiness that a man needs and seeks. God is the ultimate end, our goal.

There is more into that. You can definitely prove the existence of God with Ethics and Morals.

Not necessarily true. Occasionally, people do have spiritual experiences, even today. I don’t believe… I KNOW. I paid a heavy price, but I know beyond the shadow of a doubt.
 
Dear E-Z, thank you for the link. I gave the article a quick read and though compelling I failed to find any proof to substantiate it’s claims. As stated in another thread morality, a sense of fairness, and self aware(ness) is not unique to humans. And to this date I have not (although I wish otherwise) seen evidence it is a gift from God.
