could anybody explain to me simply the differnce between catholcs, orthodocs and Protestants in clear points and the cause of that Division

You’ve asked an impossible thing with that clear points clause.

But to try to sum it up:

The Catholic and Orthodox Churches were one until the mid 11th century, the official break occured over demands that the East add a clause to the Nicene Creed which is heretical in Greek (though not in Latin). The break itself had started before then, and was not to be completed until 1254 when the Crusades sacked the capital of the Eastern Empire (Constantinople), causing popular opinion to move against them. While this may sound anti-Catholic, the fact is the Catholics seem to always be the ones doing something whenever relations reach a new big lowpoint, the Orthodox did stuff to Catholics as well.

The Protestant movement left the Catholic Church in the 16th century, mostly spurned on by the issue of corruption, as it continued theological issues began to rise between them. Protestantism is so varied that it is impossible to say what the differences are exactly.

From a Catholic perspective Catholics are unique in that they have claim to being Christs established Church on Earth. Christ started the Church, and clearly did not like the idea of divisions, and Catholics can trace their tradition back to this. It also allows Catholics to claim apostolic succession, that is the right of the apostles to choose successors in the Pope and the Bishops who will represent the Church for their generation.

The Orthodox Church was originally a part of the Catholic church but a disagreement occurred over some theological issues, mostly regarding the authority of Rome and the Pope. The break is agreed upon by most theologians in both sides to be a bad thing, possibly even a sin by both Churches but neither is willing to budge on certain doctrines. For the most part they are very similar to the Catholic Church in their structure, and they still have claim to Apostolic succession because they broke away with members who were established parts of the Apostolic line. Interestingly most of the lay people, and even the priests who were on the border area of the Great Schism didn’t know about or care about the schism until aggressions from the Roman side broke out. Heck even today I doubt many lay people from either group consider the separation significant at all, but our leaders are pretty adamant about it and I am sure a great many people on this forum would be willing to tell you that all the fault lies in the Orthodox Church and that Catholics who view them as equals are terrible Catholics.

Protestant is a blanket term that covers pretty much any Church that formed in protest to the Church or protest to another one of the protestant groups. They do not have apostolic succession claims because they typically broke off due to the teachings of one person rather than as a whole established piece of the Church. They are extremely varied in their practices with some being very close to the Church’s teachings (Anglican, Presbyterian) and some being completely contrary (Westboro Baptist).

Although the following table does not discuss what caused the differences between the three groups, it is a summary of some of the key differences:

If there are any terms you don’t understand, such as Apostolic Succession, please let us know and we can explain further. 🙂

pleeaase, clear points
ill give it a shot with my highschool educated mind my friend. simply put, Martin Luther was one of the first to break away from the Catholic Church, although at the outset, this was not his intent. he simply felt the need to to reform the Church from within, from what he perceived to be abuses. indulgences and such. he also believed that faith alone was enough to make it into heaven. we as Catholics of course do not believe it is of faith alone, but faith and obedience. as can be found in the book of James and many other places in the Gospels from Jesus himself. hope this is a good start for you. there is more to add, we have not even gotten to Calvin yet. lol! Peace to you and yours. and welcome to CAF. 🙂 p.s. i am not at all qualified to speak on the Orthodox/Catholic split. nine 2 is the go to guy for that. i have very limited knowledge on the Orthodox. Peace

Really, useful link, thanks 👍
what needs to be explained:
what is the meening that a " believer " would choose from bible only what he wants and reject the rest?
Does the pope or the church is supported by holy spirit? how?
Infallibility of pope ?
Purgatory ?
Doesn’t, jesus before taken to heavens, say the proper way to worship?
what is that rally exactly?

Hard for me to say really. My church (Assemblies of God) is in the Protestant tradition, by way of John Wesley and Azusa Street, but there are points of theology where I think the Catholics and the Orthodox are better. Color me 50% Protestant I suppose, and 25% each Orthodox and Catholic. Or simply a Christian. 😛

What… didn’t you know we where known as the “ortho-docs”… 😛
That’s news - Is that in your spirituality or just professional knowledge among the Orthodox? I suppose that would make Orthodox better orthopaedic surgeons than others.

I’ll attach 3 documentary clips - each of them are about 28 minutes long

So, if you have 1 hour & a 1/2 to spare, it covers Orthodox Christianity, from beginning to current.

Not only ortho-pedic but also ortho-dontists… 😛

We are very talented you know… 😃

who is the pope of orthodox nowadays ?
There is no equivalent of a Pope in Orthodoxy, and never has been. Each Orthodox Church has its own leader, although actual power is held by what’s called the “Holy Synod”, a group of senior bishops who have ultimate decision making power.

The Patriarch of Constantinople (currently Bartholomew I) is considered to be the Spiritual head of all Orthodox, as the See with the greatest honour, but his office and his powers are nowhere near what the Pope is in Catholicism.
