Hey Catholic Answers,

I wanted to reach out and see you guys could share your thoughts on my situation and any possible similar testimonies.

I have been dating a nonbeliever (he neither believes in Christ or any other religion) for two years, and he has treated me very well. It turns out his mother is a witch and worships Satan. There’s been physical proof, I know she practices tarot cards, perform black spells, signed a petition asking to keep a certain witch in her town, an altar with a black goddess, and there has been several dreams God given me revealing certain things she keeps doing black magic curses against me.

For the past six months and for the first time in my life, I have struggled to find a job. Only one opportunity has opened. I was considering leaving the area and moving with my parents 400 miles away since I had to sign a lease for my apartment, so I prayed to God and the Virgin Mary and said if they wanted me here to give me a sign and a week later, a dream opportunity came. I had an amazing interview, the priest blessed me beforehand and this week, someone approached me in church this week and said something that sounded like “You love God very much, you will find a good job.” (it’s possible he said you love God very much, you are doing a good job") I was on my knees praying when I was approached. I never saw that man again.

I have been going to mass daily for about three months, going to confession, and been praying at least one rosary a day. I have asked for God for direction and help, but this opportunity has gone silent for a month (no rejection.)

But now it has gone silent (no rejection), it’s been over a month since an amazing onsite interview. I am very confused now about this relationship as this person treats me very well and why I am out of work for so long . . .

I would bring this concern to your priest and explain in detail about your boyfriends mother.

In addition to speaking with your pastor I think you need to do a reality check on your current situation.

You mention you have been dating for 2 years. Has the question of marriage came up? Is this a man you could see yourself married to? If yes, how do you see raising any children around the influence of his mother? Would he support you raising the children Catholic and defend you and the children against any negative comments or behavior from his mother?

With regard to the job. My general rule is if I haven’t heard anything by two weeks, they aren’t interested. I would have already made contact with the company to see if things are just moving slow or if they have passed. Unfortunately many companies don’t have the decency to contact people if they choose to pass on them. I have had plenty of great on site interviews, but not gotten the job. I even had a couple where I had 4+ interviews, including the VP flying out to speak with me where I ultimately was passed over. My point is don’t keep waiting and hanging your hope on this job. Call them and if the say they pass then do an honest assessment of job opportunities in the area.

So for me it would be two questions. Is this a relationship where I could confidently raise my kids in the faith? If not, is there any reason to stay in the area (good job prospects, low cost of living, et cetera)?

My boyfriend doesn’t seem to know about her practices, I confronted him about it and he didn’t seem to know the details of what she does let alone that she practices witchcraft. I decided not to push it.

My mom talked to a priest about it as she was receiving dreams from God about spells this woman was casting. The priest only said where there is darkness, light will eventually shine through. The priest never said I should end the relationship, etc. I would like to get a hold of my local parish priest, but I am not sure how to approach them about something like this.

This weekend, I was seriously considering breaking off the relationship, but the priest had a message about how we cannot hold people accountable for their parents sins and God judges everyone individually. My boyfriend’s family on the dad’s side believes strongly in Christ, but his dad did not carry the belief so I think sometimes God wants my boyfriend to be saved.

As for having children with him, I don’t think I would ever have children in general as I don’t feel called to do that with anyone. My boyfriend is very supportive of me praying and has even picked me/dropped me off at church.

For the jobs, I sometimes seen companies call later for various reasonsI used to work in the recruiting process and on the engineering side, the candidates were spoiled but on the business side, not so much. I know God can work miracles and still bring that job back to me if that’s what he wants. He is God, he can do anything. If it didn’t have so many godly signs attached to it, I would have probably written that off.

Just how much of this witchcraft and devil worship have you actually seen, and how much comes from dreams (yours, your mothers, or anyone else’s)?

God can and does speak to people in dreams, but it is not a reliable way to live. Dreams usually come from our own minds. Even the devil can affect your dreams.

The first thing to do is separate the fact from fiction from speculation. You have no right to slander this woman without concrete proof. I’m sorry if I’m wrong, but you seem to rely too much on dreams.

Sorry if I sounded overly harsh. But you are at a point in your life when the decisions you make-about work, marriage, and family-can effect the rest of it, and, if the demonic is truly involved, even ruin it

Please, talk to your priest.

I would call the company (or write them a thank-you note for the interview, and then call them) to ask about the status of the position. It may be taking a while for paperwork or whatever, or it may be that the position has been filled. If you ask, you at least know where you stand and whether you need to keep waiting or not. 🙂

It’s fine that you don’t currently feel called to have children, but be aware that if you are called to marriage, you need to at least be open to the possibility of having children, and be willing to welcome any children God may give you. You are also expected to raise any children in the Catholic faith, so that’s something to consider.

Definitely speak with your priest or a good spiritual director about your situation with your boyfriend and his mom (not the dreams, but the actual objective things you have seen). We need not fear witchcraft and “curses” because we know that God triumphs over them. Focus on doing God’s will, and be sure to do a lot more listening than talking when you pray for discernment. I wouldn’t ask for more signs, I’d ask instead that God help you to make the right decisions so that His Will may be done in your life.

Will :gopray2: for you.

It turns out his mother is a witch and worships Satan.
My most heart-felt sentiment is to encourage you to stay away from both of them.

In the first place, I’m sorry, but I would humbly suggest that two years without making sincere marriage plans is already a long time.

In the second place, practicing the myriad forms of witchcraft, whether one actively worships satan or not, is an incredibly dangerous spiritual practice. Your boyfriend’s mother is very likely to have openly invited demonic influence into her life, and that includes those over whom she has authority, like her son. I have almost no doubt that they have obliged.

These two facts being what they are, I think it is tremendously imprudent to seek to pursue marriage with such a man.

I would also encourage you to consider that having children as a married woman is not something that is a choice, it is one of the key purposes of getting married in the first place.

I’m sorry, but if you “don’t feel called” to children and to marriage, I would again humbly state you have no business finding boyfriends either.
