I know how to relate to Father. I understand Son. But I find myself grasping to love the Holy Spirit like I should. I feel closer to Mary. And I love and extol Her and pray my rosary with joy daily, but I feel like I am leaving Him out. He’s God. He’s the Soul of my soul. I love Him, but it feels subdued. I can even relate to St. Michael. Maybe it’s the proper nouns? I mean I know the Father had no body, but we can anthropomorphosize Him and I can see myself sitting in His lap. Jesus literally came in the flesh. But The Holy Spirit? We have images of a Dove, and Fire and Wind. Hard to relate to. I dunno. Anyone else ever deal with this? Im aware of course that God is one, but seems approriate to be able to hinor the Trinity in totality for each Person therin. Suggestions to properly honor and adore Him and love Him in my spiritual life? He deserves all my ardent love.

You don’t need images of the Holy Spirit to be devoted to Him. I personally feel very devoted to Him. He delivered me from pornography and masturbation. I used to be addicted to pornography, but now, for two months, I haven’t viewed it. I never would have been able to stop on my own. Moreover, He is continually helping me fight lust. I often go to work out at a gym and every time I go there, there are women working out and many of them are wearing tight clothing. Because of the Holy Spirit, I’m getting better at controlling myself.

I know He’ll deliver me from lust, so I can pray with confidence. If He can deliver me from pornography, He can deliver me from looking at a woman’s body and lusting after her. Romans 8:13 says that we can, by the Spirit, put to death the deeds of the body. We have to, otherwise we’ll die in our sins.

Another way the Holy Spirit works in my life is by interceding for me. There are times when I’m praying that I don’t even know what to say. In a situation such as that, I pray in tongues. It’s one of the spiritual gifts Paul talks about in 1 Corinthians, chapters 12 and 14. We’re taught to earnestly desire those gifts, so I encourage you to ask the Lord to grant you one or more of those gifts (such as gifts of tongues, healing, faith and wisdom). If you have one or more of those gifts, you’ll see the Holy Spirit move in your life and it will be awesome and impossible to ignore. I guarantee it.

You are doing fine. Perhaps your difficulty is the recognition that God is, in many ways, beyond our understanding. Nothing says you can “get close.” God is not just an old man or a young man (the Father, the Son). God is also Spirit, which we cannot see but certainly can be aware of. Can you see a force? Can you see a thought? Can you see love? No, but you know by their effects that they exist and that they have power. I think the Holy Spirit is something like that, a force, a thought, a love, which is God acting in my life and yours and in all creation. But even that surely falls short of a complete understanding. God bless you!

He’s the one who comes to you. He gives you the strength to be charitable when you’d rather be curt, the smile when you want to frown. He fills you with the desire to be a better catholic every day. Who got the apostles out of the Upper Room and onto onto the roads of Judea, then then across the ancient world spreading the new religion of Christianity? They spread the word of Christ, but their feet moved due to the Holy Spirit! The Pentecost is right around the corner, you will get to know the Holy Spirit through it, if you just listen! Good luck and God Bless.

Perhaps you could visit Catholic Charismatic Prayer groups or purchase from Sophia Institute the book, “True Devotion to The Holy Spirit”.

The Holy Spirit dwells within you.

You need not do anything to be close to Him other than close your eyes and go to the depth of your being where He dwells, and just rest in His presence.
