Today I committed a mortal sin that I instantly regretted after. I feel horrible right now. I haven’t been very good morally in the past 4 months, and today was like an awakening/revelation for me. I intend to change that from this point on, this is not who I want to be.

After some prayer and reflection on what I have done, I know I should go to confession. I realized I have committed other mortal sins months ago and have been receiving the Eucharist in this state for some time now. The problem is that I can’t go to confession at church when they offer it because I am only a sophomore in Highschool and I can’t drive myself, and my parents won’t be able to either. My only other option is at school (I go to a catholic school) when they offer it. But it is in 2 months. I can’t bear this guilt and regret of committing these sins and offending God for that long. I also fear for my soul should, God forbid, something happens to me that threatens my life between now and then. It’s constantly in the back of my mind. It’s too much. Plus I would have to refrain from communion for that long, and knowing my parents, they would ask me why I am not receiving communion. I don’t want to tell them that I’ve committed mortal sins because I am ashamed and I don’t want them to think less of me because of this.

This is a hard situation for me. I ask that you please pray for me if you can, and offer any advice if you can. Thanks and God bless,
J.T.

If you attend a Catholic school, doesn’t a priest visit there? Can’t you make arrangements for a priest to hear your confession there?

do you go to Mass on Sunday? See if you can get the priest’s attention before mass and ask him if he can squeeze in a mortal sin confession. Just tell your parents you need to go to confession.

1 NEVER receive gods mercy when you are in a state of mortal sin. abstain. there is nothing wrong with not receiving the eucharist.

2 make frequent examinations of conscience and remember them. they will help you in confession.

3 make sure you are doing mortal sin. i mean, i am not telling you to do it,just verify.

4 can you walk/bike to church?

I’m assuming your parents are Catholic. Why can’t you just tell them that you need to go to confession?

Yeah,
Or if there are other parishes in your area? Google search and look up their times for confession? Get a ride?
I also suggest - if you haven’t already since your last mortal sin - praying an act of perfect contrition right now, without distraction, humbly and intently and prayerfully.

O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended you, and I detest all my sins, because I dread the loss of heaven and the pains of hell; but most of all because they offend you, my God, who are all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of your grace, to confess my sins, to do penance, and to amend my life. Amen.*

God bless.

Okay, if you’re a sophomore in high school and struggling with this, you need to talk to your confessor about when and if some of this stuff is even mortal in your case.

I would say pray the rosary and if you are able, attend daily Mass when you can to help stop these sins. 👍

Your parents can’t take you to confession for two months? Is there another day of the week they could? Call and make an appointment to go on that day to Confession.

For reference, thevickinator16 posted this on another thread, I feel like it’s pertinent to mention here.

"I have a definition of mortal sin from the glossary in the Catechism. This pertains to the paragraphs 1855- 1859.

Mortal sin: A grave infraction of the law of God that destroys the divine life in the soul of the sinner (sanctifying grace), constituting a turn away from God.

For a sin to be mortal, three conditions must be present:
  1. grave matter ( is specified by the Ten Commandments. One muast take into account who is wronged: violence against parents is inself graver than a complete stranger.
  2. & 3. full knowledge of evil of act and complete consent (It presupposes knowledge of the sinful character of the act, of its opposition to God’s law. It also implies a consent sufficently deliberate to be a personal choice. Feigned ignorance and hardness of heart do not dimish, but rather increase, the voluntary character of a sin."
If you’re absolutely certain that whatever you’ve done is a mortal sin, then yes you need to go to confession at the next available opportunity. But honestly, while your sin may be grave, and you should STILL go to confession anyway, whatever it is probably isn’t mortal.

Assuming your parents are Catholic though, just tell them you want to go to confession. You don’t even have to say why, just tell them you haven’t been in a while and want to go. Plus, I don’t think they’ll think any less of you for wanting to follow the rules. You’re a sophomore, and this in a way shows a bit of personal responsibility on your part. They don’t need to know it’s because of a mortal sin, that’s between you and God (and the priest).

If you don’t already, I suggest you get yourself a scapular, have it blessed then wear it permanently. As well as pray the rosary. Do these things and you will be greatly helped.
