First off, let me say, I was not sure which forum to put this in - the Non-Catholic one or the Apologetics one. But I decided to post this thread in this forum, because I believe it’s the most appropriate. If, on the other hand, it turns out I erred, please let me know and move this thread to the appropriate forum. Thank you!

Now than…Dinosaurs! They have to be the most fascinating creatures God has ever created. No one knows for sure how they become extinct, but everyone knows they all died - and this fact has been used for years by some non-catholics to challenge - though not necessarily attack - Catholicism. “If death didn’t come into the world until Adam and Eve had sinned, then how do you explain the dinosaurs?” some non-catholics like to argue.

Well, I have to admit, this was my understanding as well for a long, long time. I considered all of creation, and all living things within, to be immortal, until, that is, Adam and Eve decided to eat the forbidden fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. But recently I began to ponder the question…how indeed could the dinosaurs have become extinct if they were created immortal?

As it turns out, this is not the case. The dinosaurs were not at all immortal. God only created man and woman immortal - nothing else on earth was created immortal. Which means that there is no contradiction between religion and science.

And, here’s where I found out the truth:

Original Sin
Question from on 10-22-2007:

Dr. Geraghty,

I am currently reading Augustine in my Philosophy of Religion class, and am having difficulty with the notion of original sin. I understand how it could be a convincing Theodicy in his time, but am wondering how one would defend it in light of what we now know about the history of our planet. If we look at dinosaurs, for example, they were already living in a world of disease, carnivores, and natural disasters - long before the first man could have sinned. How do we interpret the doctrine of Original Sin in light of this?

Thanks, David

Answer by Richard Geraghty on 10-23-2007:

Dear David,

Let us assume for the sake of argument that the dinosaurs existed long before the first human pair, Adam and Eve. I assume that they were grass eaters and carnivores, that other kinds of animals lived and died. I make no assumption that the equivalent of lions and sheep lay down with each other eating grass. No. Lions still ate sheep. Now when Adam and Eve first appeared in the Garden of Eden, they had the special gift of immortality, unlike the other animals. They could not suffer and die because of God’s gift. But when they sinned, they lost the gift of being free of death and suffering. The other animals never had these gifts.

Dr. Geraghty

Sure, this is an “argument” mainly between the “old earth” and “young earth” fundamentalists and evangelicals. The “death before sin” objection has been dealt with in many threads in here, too many to list. Several articles on the web also address the topic in some detail: this old earth creationist site appears to link most of them. They address both the “biblical” arguments and some theological issues (all from evangelical / fundamentalist / Protestant perspectives).

Once you accept anything at all lived and died before Adam/Eve (i.e. before the rise of the first truly human beings), one has to accept there was animal death and suffering before the Fall of mankind.

Exactly! Welcome to spiritual adulthood!

God love you,

Some YEC argue that the pictures of dragons in various cultures are dinosaurs. And, they would claim that there were baby dinosausrs on the ark. Thus they see dino living along with mankind in the 6,000 years. Dying off from human hunting.

While others argue that the pervasive image of the dragon is from man’s imagination upon encountering and admiring the mystery of the fossil record of dinosaurs.

What would God consider death…

Death of a body, or spiritual death…

From Gods point of view, life does not end at bodily death, only our point of view does this occur.

From His point of view. death is the death of a spirit, because then, the being no longer exists…

The being however still exist if all that occurred is a physical death…

However, do Animals have an immortal soul? No…

So, could a spirit of a dinosaur die, if the spirit was never there in the first place?

In Christ

While I am not a YEC, I DO accept the hypothesis that dinosaurs became extinct more recently than scientists think. I do not say this without evidence: We have recently discovered soft tissue in a Tyrannosaurus Rex fossil complete with small particles of DNA. We also found an extremely well preserved (I.e. mummified) Hadrosaurus (I think it was a Hadrosaur). It is not that far fetched at all. Not long ago, we discovered a school of Coelocanths swimming in the ocean…caught one too I believe. In Africa there is a tribe that swears up and down there is an animal is their jungles they call Mokole-mbembe, which means “one who stops up rivers”. Their descriptions of the beast match perfectly the description of a small Sauropod. So the fundamentalists may be onto something…not in that the world is only 6000 years old of course, but that these animals did not go extinct until relatively recently, if at all.

(Which would totally RAWK!)

Scientists have misnamed them “dinosaurs”, but if you believe in the new testament of the bible. they are called “Jesus Horses” whilst the old testament referred to them as “Lord Lizards”. So they were included in the Bible, if you look hard enough.:angel1:

There was no fossil record of dino until very recently, a few decades ago.

So, it is possible that the ancestors of steven king were the artists in those caves.

Google says 50 million years ago. Of course, crocodiles still exist. 😃

People tend to ignore that which does not fit into their belief system. Therefore, the fossil record was ignored in the Christian world until relatively recently. I have no doubt that there has been extensive study of the fossil record in other parts of the world. The fossil record in China is EXTENSIVE. Where is the legend of the dragon strongest? In China. Who made the advances in Catholic theology to make evolution part of God’s plan? Teilhard de Chardain. Where did he do his work? In China. A literal reading of the Genesis story is not necessary to be Catholic.

Just as YEC LDS deny that which does not fit into their belief system, and try to stretch things by turning tapirs into horses. I am looking forward to the Mormon dinosaur biting the dust. Perhaps if the DNA scientists find descendents of the original Norse settlers on Greenland, among natives of the Great Lakes tribes, LDS will have to abandon a literal interpretation of the BOM. They do not have to look very hard to find the obvious. 😃

Well some dinosaurs are among us. Right now. My cat sometimes eat them and leave the feathers all over the carpet.🤷
I love dinosaur soup. It literaly tastes like chicken!😃

Remeber that the Venerable Cardinal John Henry Newman. A man that loved the evidence and became Catholic out of that love was a early Darwin supporter on evolution. He was deep on history in that too. 👍

Well, I don’t see any contradiction between God creating the universe and evolution, nor do I see dinosaurs as a threat to the Faith. For all we know, evolution could be God’s work (God dose work in mysterious ways). Though evolution is just a theory of science, not a law or anything. Even still, with all it’s evidence, I consider it to be the most possible way God created all of the earthly creatures. I also believe the Big Bang was the most possible way God created the universe. But it’s just a thoery, like evolution. No one can really prove it, since no one saw it happen. Maybe if the Big Bang and evolution were - for want of a better word - reinacted in a controlled enviornment, that could be proof that they really happened. But I do not know. I’m not a scientist.

Also, my favorite dinosaur is the T-Rex because it’s so big and menancing. And because the name “T-Rex” reminds me of Christ the King on the Cross.

How many people now that the father of the Big Bang theory was a Catholic priest. Monsignor Georges Lemaitre, and that he headed the Vatican comision on science during Pious XI and Pius XII?
