ALBANY – The Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany has joined several other churches in a lawsuit against the New York State Department of Financial Services.

The lawsuit is challenging mandates the DFS recently imposed on health insurance companies that in the view of the churches would force them to pay for abortions.

Mary DeTurris Poust is Director of Communications for the Diocese. “We have had multiple interactions with the Department of Financial Services in an effort to reconcile this without litigation and that was not possible so we really had no choice but to litigate because this is something we cannot allow,” Ms. DeTurris Poust said.
