Is anyone familiar with the Diocese of Jefferson City Missouri, and specifically the Newman Center at Truman State? Looking for a solid, orthodox Newman Center / Diocese as we look for colleges!
 
My wife and I graduated from there. That was the early '90’s though. The current building they are in was built my last year I was there. Wish I could help you more.

I can tell you that you’re talking about central Missouri. The area is not a hotbed of radicalism for sure. They won’t be teaching or promoting anything that is deviates from church policy.

They probably have female alter servers and use Eucharistic ministers on wilder days.
 
Both of my children went to Truman and are recent graduates (2011 & 2014). They both were active in the Newmann center on campus and actually met their spouse or future spouse there. I would classify it as relatively conservative- especially for a college campus. I never heard them reference any practice that caused me to wince. They both loved their time at Truman.

If your child decides to go, I highly encourage he or she to go on the Awakenings retreat offered in February. It was definitely a highlight for my kids. I teach high school and keep in contact with some graduates and just heard from several who went on the retreat this year and told me how awesome it was.

Looks like they have pretty close relationship with the Newman Center there since the Newman Center chaplain is working together with the parish priest on the confession schedule. Note the Eucharistic Adoration on Friday nights and the square dancing on Sunday nights. Sounds like a nice parish and the Newman Center probably has the same good feeling.

I visited Kirksville as a tourist last September. Pretty isolated town, but the impression I got was that is was sweet, quaint, homey, quiet and pleasant. The students I saw seemed to dress pretty conservatively and some were strolling downtown to get an ice cream cone or visit the music store. I’d send my child there; they’d probably get some serious studying done without a lot of big-city distractions.
 
Thanks everyone. A friend of mine told me about a play at Truman where the girl stripped down to her underwear. so I guess that caught my attention. I guess after 12 years of Catholic schooling, public universities are just, well, public. From what I’ve been able to tell, the Newman Center looks good. We’ll be visiting there. Wish they had dorms there…Newman Hall at U of I is awesome. A nice, orthodox, Catholic bubble in the midst of a huge secular school.

Just curious, how far are you travelling? From the midwest, or are you coming from further away? Good luck to you.

Ask them about the fire in the Newman Center. Right after it was built there was a fire caused by a faulty breaker box. A big chuck of the brand new building had to be repaired.

My oldest will be at Northwest Missouri State, a few hours away next year. Again good luck.
