Dear 4givemeasinner,
Peace be with you – and thank you for taking this possible vocation seriously. Considering a vocation to the priesthood is a very selfless act!
I recently spent some time with the Jesuits, and I can tell you that they are a great order filled with wonderful people. That said, being in a religious order, you really need to have a strong love for the charism above all. Somewhat like you, I sort of chose the Jesuits because of their educational prowess, and then felt the spirituality was “good enough,” but it really has to be the other way around. A religious order cannot just be a vehicle to the kind of work you want to do. The charism of the order has to be your first love. This is true especially of the Jesuits, who are very open to your desires, but may have other ideas. For instance, my assistant novice director wanted to be a military chaplain, but he was asked to be asst. novice director for several years. Who knows if he will ever get to be a military chaplain. The Jesuits value obedience very highly, so you would really have to love the Jesuits in general more than you love the idea of one particular form of ministry.
Also, I don’t know if the Jesuits have retained “the antiquity of the Church” in terms of liturgy! Definitely not like the Dominicans have.
How firmly set are you on exploring military chaplaincy? I don’t know much about the military archdiocese which a previous poster linked to, but it seems to me to be the natural place to start if you know you want to do a military chaplaincy (as opposed to parish work, teaching, etc.). They need men and will be able to give you the special formation you need to do this work. If you have a love for education, all the better! An educated priest will be welcomed by any diocese and and be of value in any ministry.
Best wishes in your discernment, and Merry Christmas,
