Dioceses and cities

Err, all of the dioceses I see in the USA list are named after the city they are headquartered in. While a diocese is frequently larger than this area, they do not necessarily correspond to county or city limits. In fact, perusing this map of dioceses, it appears to me as if dioceses are almost always larger than one county.

I think we have a better idea what the OP was looking for now.

What I was trying to suggest was that dioceses info such as provided by the USCCB and Wikipedia would typically give a list of counties that are included in a given dioceses. At least for the cases where a given county is completely contained in a diocese it would then be possible to check out county information to get a list of cities/communities therein.

I live in California (specifically in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles) and we have quite a number of dioceses that include multiple counties. But we generally do not split a single county between dioceses. (I imagine there are some exceptions due to local physical boundaries and county border modifications. I do know of parishes that cross country lines so if the archdiocese was ever split it would be interesting to see how those parishes would be handled.)

They don’t always fall along county lines though. In Nebraska I know that because the Lincoln diocese includes everything south of the Platte River, there are counties that are in two dioceses, there is even a city that is split between the Lincoln and Grand Island Dioceses and has one parish in the Lincoln Diocese, and one in the Grand Island Diocese. So it does happen that counties and even cities are split.

You also have the case of Kansas City - which spans two states and two dioceses. Officially, Kansas City, KS and Kansas City, MO are two different cities, but because they are contiguous, often times people get confused. KC KS is in the Archdiocese of Kansas City (KS), whereas KC MO is in the Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph.

No. On this forum, you only have a small window (maybe 30 minutes) after you initially post something in which to go back and edit it. After that, there is no way to edit it. You can simply put the info in a follow up post instead.

Yes, I can see how that might get tricky. If you see something in a post you want to edit, you could always try sending a PM to a moderator. But I don’t know that they’d be too keen on making lots of tiny changes for you. That would make a lot of extra work for them.

It might just be that this forum thread is not the best way to disseminate all of the information. Perhaps you could create a Google Doc or even a specially designated blog that you do retain editorial control over. Then you can just link to it. Or you could still post the info in this thread, but just add a disclaimer that the most recent up-to-date list can be found at [insert link here].
