I have a muslim aquaintance who is a pharmacist at a local supermarket. She wears her headcovering everyday. She is a
very lovely person. We got into discussions about headcoverings.
I told her as a Traditional Catholic, I wear a head covering to Mass.
She thought that was really interesting, so we have had a few
discussions of head coverings. One day, I was wearing my head covering on the local public transit going to Mass. When I was on the bus, I had people scowling at me likely tihnking I was a muslim.
Some of the glances were outright hostile. Then, some lovely ethopian women got on the bus about 2 weeks later, they had coverings on their heads, and they looked me, and smiled at me.
They seen my 3D face of Jesus with the crown of thorns on my neck, and they smiled at me again. Others though, not so friendly.
It didn’t really bother me about others looks at me. It did make me think however that muslim women get dirty looks or scowled at
because some people are too ignorant to respect others beliefs even if they do not agree with them. I mentioned this to my muslim aquaintance, and she told me that it was not very respectful of those people to scowl at me for wearing a headcovering. We agreed that no matter what your belief is, ignorance does exist. Both of us wear head coverings, and
we both get scowled at. Some likely think to themselves, that such a practice should be allowed, and some others don’t like it, and then there are those that are neutral and don’t care eith er way. I personally am of the opinion, that if a woman no matter what her belief is, if she wants to wear a headcovering so what?
Why do certain members of society frown on a headcovering?
For some, it is comfortable, for some it is tradtional, and for some
it is part of their belief system. For me, I wear a headcovering
because it is required, and I like it, it feels right. for me, it shows respect. For those who scowl at me, go ahead, scowl 😃 If it makes you feel good to scowl, be my guest. I wont quit wearing my headcovering.

I’ve never heard of a Catholic wearing a head covering but more power to you.

I went to a private Catholic gradeschool and all the doctors in town sent their kids there. They were all muslim so thier girls wore the head coverings and they all got dismissed to pray during the day.

We learned to respect other peoples religions VERY fast.

I don’t understand why people scowl at others for silly reasons like this. Its not like they are knocking on your door trying to convert you or something.

Why do you wear this and can any one do this?

Hi Marilena,
I say if you want to wear a headcovering - Go for it! It’s totally between you & God and I hope people would keep their “looks” to themselves.

We had several “headcoverings… yea or neigh?” threads awhile back and they got very very heated. Hopefully this one won’t get out of hand… but I wanted to give you the “heads up.” 😉

Blessings to you!

There is an older lady at our parish that wears one and my aunt, who is Byzantine Catholic, wears one. I don’t, but I’ve seen them sold online before… they’re beautiful. I think it’s a personal decision to wear one or not. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think before Vatican II all women had to cover their heads in mass. I know my mom used to wear a “doily” on her head (as she describes it). At Sacramentals.com you can find some.

**I live in an area with a large Muslim community, so I don’t see many scowls. I think if people open their minds and realize this is a form of modesty, like the churches that forbid make-up and pants, they wouldn’t scowl as much.

However, I did work with a Muslim lady who chose not to wear a headcovering for work. A lot of Muslim ladies gave her what for, for being so immodest.

Scowls go both ways. Although, I really don’t see the difference between a woman wearing a head covering or wearing a hat, or a babushka(sp?).**

Of course you can wear a headcovering! 🙂 Anyone can:) Catholics that go the Latin Mass usually cover their heads. It is a sign of respect, and modesty. I enjoy wearing one because it reflects my tradional values. I say to those who love to scowl, feel free 🙂 Someone may come up and ask me some day “why are you wearing that headcovering?” If that happens, it will be a perfect opportunity to witness for Christ 🙂

It’s been my understanding that headcoverings are reserved for Holy Mass?

A woman can wear a head covering all of the time if she chooses to. I try and do that.🙂

If you want it to be reserved only for Mass, that is up to you, but you can wear it all the time. I wear mine when
we have our priest for dinner, or going to Mass. Not all
the time.

Wow that is really rude. I have a Muslim friend so I don’t mind when Muslims or anyone else do it. But even for people who dislike people who are different, I can’t imagine someone actually giving you a dirty look! That’s awful. Some people are so disrespectful.

Indeed! Long live Pope Benedict XVI!!! I just think he is
so wonderful! 🙂

Thank you for the clarifications! 🙂 I’ve only worn my mantilla during the funerals of close relatives.

There is also a group of Ethiopians that sometimes attend Mass at our parish. They wear a thin white gauze-like material over their hair and garments. It’s just beautiful and has an ethereal quality.

I would like to clarify something about head coverings. They can be lace veils, scarves, or hats. I prefer opaque(meaning that you can’t see through it) scarves, because then you can’t see my hair.

All the memories I have of my Mother and Grandmother going to Mass, they always wore their veils. It wasn’t until I started going to school that I had to start wearing one too. My Mother died June 1999 and Grandma died in May 1999. So now I have their veils, they are so beautiful. I wish that tradition was still in place. Women would dress respectable when they attended Mass if they had to wear a head cover. Thats just my opinion, but that’s how I really feel. :gopray2:

I wear a white headcovering (picture: img.photobucket.com/albums/v376/ForkAmok/amishish.jpg) in everyday life, and wear a similar black one with a lace mantilla over it for Mass.

I get a few weird looks, but I tend to smile and wave at people who stare at me, and they stop fairly quickly… 😃

I’ve only been mistaken for Amish twice, and only once did I have my headcovering on

Hi Marilena I don’t know why anyone would frown at others; that is certainly disrespectful. Perhaps it’s just my Canadian city, but I’ve never seen anyone been scowled at for wearing a head covering whether they were Muslim or Christian. That’s quite different to hear.

Well, I hopped on the public transit this morning to go to Mass, and there was an older gentleman on the bus across the isle from us.
and he gawked at myself, and my husband. until I put my headcovering on ( we were approcahing the church ) he quit gawking once the headcovering was on. Why did I notice it? Because he was sitting right across from us staring at my husband and I both. as soon as the headovering was on, he looked awy. Now that’s a twist!
pretty hard not to notice when someone is staring straight at you.

They have some gorgeous mantillas, chapel caps and veils on this site:

halo-works.com/

And yes, it’s uncharitable to give someone scowls over wearing hair coverings, be they Muslim or Catholic or Amish.

Maybe Catholic women should pick a day out of the year, and wear a headcovering the whole day, as a show of solidarity with all women, Amish, Muslim, and Catholic.🙂
