Hi Everyone

My apologies if I have posted in the wrong forum, this is my first time.

I am currently assessing my life and I am trying to be the best Catholic that I can be. I have been going to Confession on a regular basis and taking Communion.

For the last couple of days I have been assessing my life and my sins - and out of no where I remembered a sin from over 2-3 years ago that I did not confess, and that was dirty talking to ex boyfriends. Is this a mortal sin?

I completely forgot about it but I have confessed impurity regarding touching but now I am worried because I forgot to mention this sin and I have just remembered it and I have taken Communion.

Any help would be great

Hello,

I believe that the Church teaches that if an honest confession is made the absolution granted includes any sins that might have honestly been forgotten. The emphasis is on HONEST confession. I am NOT a theologian, nor an apologist, but this is my understanding of Reconciliation. The Sacrament does not require the making of a list and checking sins off during the confession rather that an honest heartfelt desire for reconciliation be expressed, that is all that G-d wants.

I think that if we were held to being eventually judged on the sins that we have forgotten to confess none of us would ever gain G-d’s grace, nor achieve heaven.

Two things:

1. If you made an honest confession without hiding anything then the confession was valid. We do not remember all the sins, of some we are not aware (read Psalm 19). But as we grow in faith, we will probably see our past faults better and better. Therefore:
2. It’s a good idea to confess the sins from our past that we for example forgot in the next confession. A priest I know recommends to confess such things at the beginning of confession, but that’s just a recommendation. Since you did not hide it on purpose, then it was not a sin that you did not confess it earlier. So do not worry, trust in the Lord. And discuss any such doubts with your confessor so that you will not lose your peace.

Beware of trying to be a perfectionist also. We are expected to do our best, and we are promised the grace, but we will fall. As someone said, it’s all about getting up one more time when we fall

I agree with you completely.
Sins which are forgotten at the time of a confession but remembered later, are best mentioned at the next confession. Once remembered, they should be confessed. And you are so right, God just wants us to do our very best and to be honest with ourselves.
He is there ready to forgive us all!
