This is heartbreaking. A situation I’ve alway struggled with. I support the teaching of the church, but I have to admit that hearing stories of people with terminal cancer/AIDS, Lou Gehrig’s disease-all of it rips at my heart strings-I want these people NOT to suffer in any way, shape or form. I know virtually all people feel the same way-no one wants someone else to suffer. It’s just really hard for me to seperate emotions on this one.

Again, just to repeat myself, I support the teaching of the church on this-I just think it’s a heartbreaking and sad situation.

**why are we so afraid to suffer?

Jesus suffered & died for our sins!!! Our Mother Mary suffered, the Apostles suffered…

“But first he must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation.” (LK 17:25)

i am proud to suffer for others!

“Then they left the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer dishonor for the name.” (Acts 5:41)**

Sancta Maria, Mater Dei, Ora Pro Nobis Peccatoribus!

I’m with you! I think that a big part of the problem is that modern medicine is making people live longer, but the quality of life is less because (I personally think) the natural life expectancy of most people would have made them die years before they got sick.

Watching people suffer is heart-wrenching. Most people have the uncontrollable urge to ease their suffering, and because they can’t, they feel helpless – especially if it’s a loved one. What dispair this man is in. 😦

Why shouldn’t we?
Because suffering in life is unavoidable, but it’s not our sole purpose of existence. If it was, you’d see the Church promoting self mutilation. 😉

Seriously though, the church would probably agree that the people in physical pain deserve to have their suffering kept to a minimum. That’s why there is no prohibition against morphine when your dying of Cancer.

True, but I never advocated suffering all the time. Asking “Why should we suffer” implies you think nobody should ever suffer. Asking “Why shouldn’t we suffer” doesn’t have the same implication; it’s just asking why we should expect to never suffer.

I agree suffering should be kept to a minimum, I just think it’s ludicrous to expect never to suffer. (If I sound stuffy and uptight I don’t mean to. Just expressing opinions.)

Actually I said “Why should we be made to suffer?” and not “Why should we suffer?” There’s a difference. Basically this guy is being made to suffer because it’s illegal for his wife to help him end it.

There’s suffering through the rough times in life and then there’s real suffering. Wha’ts happening to this guy is real suffering it’s disgusting that he has to go on suffering until he dies of old age unable to do anything at all. Sounds like a living hell to borrow the term.

I guess we just fundamentally differ on what “made to” means (though you’re right I misquoted an important word).
