I wouldn’t worry about that. The warm fuzzies are not a usual result of making a good confession. On the other hand, depression is not the work of God. It may be nothing more than a temptation by the evil one to make you loose faith in the value of frequent confession.

On the other hand, there are certain requirements for making a good confession. Perhaps God wants you to review these - even if you think you know them and understand them. Why not review the Sacrament of Penance in the Catechism, Part 2, Section 2, chapter 2.

What about looking at the things this way.

You received God’s forgiveness for your sins, are you aware of that? And do you still feel disappointed?

I confess it is unusual to learn that no advice was given by the priest. However, whenever I need a specific advice I do explicitly ask after confessing my sins and usually the priest will develop further on that sin.

Returning to the essential, I feel like the most important moment of the confession is when the priest absolves you. No one can take that from you. Another confession of mine, I get really anxious/excited for the priest to say: “I absolve you…”. Sometimes the priest is talking rather long and I am thinking: “When is he going to absolve me? Is he? Tell me I am absolved, tell me, tell me … oh I can’t wait for the absolution…”

This not to tell that advice isn’t important, but the sacrament is fullfilt when the priest absolves you. And that alone should make you happy because God just had forgotten you.

And if you need advice, remember you can also always schedule with the priest.

There is this thing about confession. You talk, the priest listen, maybe ask something, and then give the penance, or if you are lucky, he just absolve you. The penance is not the main thing you should focus on, what is important is that you confess. I have confessed mortal sins and without any penance, it is all about “what, where and how”.

The confession is you talking to a priest who listen to you “In Christi Persona”, that is important. The fact that you love Christ so much that you can tell Him everything. Of course He know what you have been up to lately, but He want you to speak out loud about it. So don’t worry, you will get your fair share of penances in due course, believe me, you will. Worry about that if you need to worry about something.

Most of the time, here in Mexico, especially. That’s normally what I get. I rarely get advice, but then again, priests here are really overburdened. Many are in the US, too. I once talked to a priest in the US who admitted, “I’m tired! I’ve been working 14 hour days!” Another talked about how thin priests, today, were being stretched. I’ve known some who are stretched over 2 parishes! So, he may have also been busy.

When you are absolved, if you are truly repentant and all, you ARE forgiven whether you feel like you are not.

I’ve seen a movement in modern times to place a lot of emphasis on feelings. I’ve seen this again and again. Well, it seems to go from people choosing to marry or not right on up.

I’ll see people saying, “I’m in love! This is the one!” Never mind that sometimes “the one” may be already married to somebody else! They will say it’s their “soul mate”, etc.

Or, sometimes, someone is “in love”…is 100% positive THIS time, it’s THE one. Okay, go out, marry, in months or years then “fall out of love”. Either divorce or stay married. Then, “fall in love”, this time with someone else…married or single. This happens again and again and again…sometimes in a form of “serial monogamy”…or sometimes adulterous-type relationships.

“Feelings” here are considered the overriding factor. It seems to determine what the decision will be. I “feel”…“love”…therefore…will go with this person, who is already married, say. My feelings are telling me to do this. I must listen to my feelings.

Now, a lot of people talk about experiences when they, are in confession, receive communion, and these can be quite wonderful. However, I think some are under the impression that if we DON’T feel them, something is wrong.

It’s sort of like people who, with sexuality, want to divorce if they don’t feel they are up over the moon every time in intimacy with a spouse.

So, not every time we go to communion or confession will we have an experience. Sometimes, many times, we may even feel NOTHING! We may not feel one thing!

Some people tell me, “I felt I was filled with the Holy Spirit. I could feel it”. They also say this happens all the time, and they can determine when it’ll happen rather than God. Maybe it’s true, but I question that.

Most of the time, I would not even expect to feel things during communion or confession. If I am absolved, I would not expect to feel a thing. Whether or not I feel absolved, I AM absolved. You were actually clean, whether you felt like it or not. Then, it’s a matter of faith to believe you were forgiven, not think, because advice wasn’t given that you are still in a state of sin. You’re not.

Receiving advice, and being forgiven, are 2 separate issues. One doesn’t have to do with the other. You were forgiven.

Now, if you would like advice, it’s nice, but whether or not you receive advice, the key is forgiveness. You received that.

To get advice, might be good as an above posted suggested and make an appt.

you got your sins forgiven, that should be enough to make you happy, probably the priest was tired, or his reasons he had. just focus on your sins being forgiven and that’s it, dont think about that or you might develop some scrupulousity.

No offense intended, but are you looking for the God of consolations or the consolations of God?

Consolations are nice sometimes because they are enjoyable and God gives them to us from time to time to encourage us. He may also give them as a reward such as big days in the church year, Easter, Christmas, … He usually gives them to those newly baptized or received into the church.

However, consolations are not our diet and sometimes mislead us. They can mislead us since we go from the high of one consolation to the high of another one, and then to the high of another one, and then to the high of another one, and then… I think you can see that pretty soon that is all we are looking forward to is consolations and not to doing what God is asking of us. And if we don’t have these consolations, that is when we are between consolations in some sort of spiritual valley, and then we begin to think that something is wrong. So we start living from high to high to high, which of course will be a big disappointment to us when we hit a low. The low we make into some sort of sign that God is displeased with us and we feel guilty.

The only way to live a spiritual life is to love the highs and the lows equally. Live by your faith, that is what your faith tells you and not what a consolation may make you think. The sacrament of confession is grace filled whether a consolation comes or does not come. In fact, greater grace may come to you because you did not get a consolation which forces you to recognize the graces without any special help, such as a consolation. That takes hard faith and is very pleasing to God.

Just thank sweet Jesus for any consolations you receive, but love him just as much when he doesn’t give them to you. And even thank him for not giving you consolations so that you may more demonstrate your complete and loyal love for him in all situations.

May God bless and keep you. May God’s face shine on you. May God be kind to you and give you peace.
