Before I left the Church three years ago, I felt a call. I thought it was to be a nun, and that scared me and consequently, I stopped practicing because of that and other reasons. I’ve been back to the Church and I’m beginning to feel the call again but I don’t think its to be a nun rather a Third Order.

I’ve only been back for two or three weeks. Looking at the above links in the sticky session, I found an Order that suits me perfectly: Dominican. I especially love the emphasis on intellect, prayers and catechists.

Aside from what I’ve read on the site, I don’t truly know Dominican spirituality and what would be the impediments to entering a Third Order. If you have any help in this area, I’d like your help.

Some things I’m worried about:
  1. I don’t have a degree after many years of college. Mostly because I want to study everything, especially spiritual matters. Dominicans have such an emphasis on intellect, I’d be worried they’d see this as a bad thing.
  2. There are no chapters near my area.
  3. I’ve just reverted back to the Church and I’m worried if the call is authentic.
Thank you for your help! 🙂

Welcome back!

The three concerns voiced will not be an impediment. Are you talking about Third Order SECULAR Dominican? Or is the Spirit inspiring you to Third Order REGULAR? The latter are the religious sisters, like the St. Cecilia or Ann Arbor Dominicans.

I’m Third Order Secular, and moderated a group 20 years ago in TN. I’m now on “isolate” status, which means I don’t have a chapter near me.

If you wish, you may email me at foundress2003@yahoo.com and we can continue the conversation from there.

Re-reading my post, I still have that fear that I could be called as nun. What holds me back from that vocation is attachment to family, my dog and my boyfriend (we came back to the Church together.) Even with that fear, I don’t want to control where God is trying to call me. I’m going to try to be open to the call and see where it leads me.

To answer your question, I was referring to Third Order secular. The truth is I don’t have enough information about either. 😦 Is it possible to get information about both?

Thank you for your help. 🙂
