Discerning a "liberal" religious community

perhaps also? Try the entire discernment process anew? Look at the various communities and ministries in the Church. I would not feel at all guilty for “not going back”… nor would I feel obligated “because you left under less than noble reasons” [paraphrase]… I would find a good Spiritual Director… lay out your reasons for leaving… your reasons for feeling like maybe you ought to go back…not because I feel you ought to go back… but because if you answer the question of “should I?”…then your discernment can progress. [although again in my opinion… don’t even be worried about that insofar as you are under no obligaton]

There are many religious who have joined a community only to find that they were called to another one. By the little you have shared this may well be one of those times…

What if the entire religious community I’ve been discerning is openly and enthusiastically supporting the “Pro-Choice” candidate this year? I find this very disturbing. I left the community not long ago, and have been trying to decide whether to return. This community already has a reputation for being somewhat liberal in theological matters, but this just goes over the top. Am I just being judgemental? What if God is calling me there anyway? I fear losing my faith in this place.

Are there any religious out there experiencing this in their own communities?

You have to do what you think is best, however I would be wary of communities such as this. From my view you must judge any reliigous community by love for truth, their love for God’s Holy and Inerrant Word. I grant that no community is perfect, but all reliigous communities should be in line with Church teaching- whether right or left of center. There is room for both in the Church so long as proper Church teaching is at the center.

However I also note that traditionalist conservative communities can be just as bad when it comes to picking and choosing. While liberals are “openly disobedient,” I find that conservatives can be “disobediently obedient.”

What is important is not necessarily the “slant” of the religious community, but their faithfulness to God’s Holy and Inerrant Word as passed on and mediated through the Church. In supporting the pro-choice candidate and given what else you have said, this community from my view does not appear to be a community that I would want anything to do with. You of course must make up your own mind through guidance and discernment and prayer.

In terms of the pro-choice candidate however, I wonder how many people are just saying they support him becasue it is in vogue to say so. In other words do they really support him, or do they just say so becasue it is the trendy thing to do? Just a question for reflection.
