Hi,
I am trying to discern whether to pursue an education and career in the IT (information technology) field. I really could use some mentoring and direction in how to get myself an education in the field. I would like to find some books on the subject. I would also like to write books on the side, but I really would like to discern whether God wants me to pursue a career in IT or data science or something computer related, and if so, what to specialize in. Thank you for any prayers for this intention.

I’m almost computer illiterate, but people in my family are in IT. .net programmers make quit a bit of money today. It’s a good field for programmers. Cybersecurity is on the rise. If you can make great apps, you’ll be paid a lot. Cold Fusion programmers make a LOT because almost no one uses Cold Fusion, so there is a lack of programmers. However, when one is needed, he can make a bundle.

You can download 1000s of free books from Google if you have a reader or an iPad.

Remember that IT is fast paced and training becomes obsolete long before you are ready to retire.

Avoid certifications in Ms apps. The market can’t support anymore.

Web development used to be the way to go when I left the market but the proliferation of self created professional looking way beyond WYSIWYG web apps may be signaling the demise of web development.

Just like cops and paramedics, security and repair or software problem resolution will always be in demand, but you must have a spotless back ground and good credit history to get these jobs.
 
Agreed about the spotless credit record. One of my relatives works for a major financial institution as a lead developer. He makes about $160,000/yr, I think, but he had to have a drug test, be fingerprinted, and have a credit check before he could get the job. People swipe badges to get in, and the place is loaded with security guards because people’s financial records are in that building. They also have access to credit reports. They figure if someone has bad credit, he has motivation to “change” his own credit record or those of his friends.

Once a place receives your application, and you look interesting to them, the first thing they will do is Google your name. So try to keep your actual name off the Internet, or else make sure anything written under your name is stellar. Of course, you can’t help it if your name is “Bob Smith” and there are a lot of them around.
