Hello, should the Holy Spirit be “shocking”? Has it drove anyone to insanity via overload of the senses? Does it transform literly an individuals world? Please , I need help with this. Tim

can’t help till I understand exactly what it is you are talking about. The Holy Spirit does not ordinarily overload or even deal with one’s sensory (name removed by moderator)ut and experience.

Peace be with you,
Remember that it is spirit talking to spirit when you talk about a kind of personal epiphany. The Holy Spirit will most likely transcend your senses which deal mainly in material, sense perception. You will “feel” the Holy Spirit in your heart and soul before your biological senses and brain.

God’s blessing,
Cth

God being awesome and omnipresent, Would communion through Spirit being almost an overload to grasp?, in Christ.
Or does He only give what we can handle? Tim

You are correct in one sense; God only gives us as much as we can handle. Even the great mystics of the early Church we overwhelmed by God’s presence.
It’s also important to remember this: God will most likely manifest Himself to you in more subtle ways. By that I mean you will most likely notice the presence of God through growth in the Cardinal and Theological Virtues, as well as experiencing the Gifts and Fruits of the Holy Spirit. Those things, which eminate from us is the proof of God working in our lives.

God’s blessings, Cth

From an experience I had, the Holy Spirit can most definitely ‘shock’ you and ‘overload’ your senses.
But its transcended beyond the senses. Hard to explain. Basically, if God wants to make Himself known, He gives the grace to us so we don’t ‘overload’ 🙂
He’s gentle, but can shake us up if He deems it necessary. He’ll never put us in harms way, but sometimes a little “holy fear” is a good thing.

But as someone else said, God always deals with everyone very subtlely. It’s how we respond to that is what’s important.

summary: God will do whatever it takes to get our attention.

I agree w/ all you have said and the underscored is something that I have had “personal discernment” with… It took me a loooong time to learn to Listen…😉

Yes the Holy Spirit can be shocking for example when the Holy Spirit shows a soul ‘themselves’ as they truly are the knowledge of this can cause the soul to be shocked at themselves. This can cause a great deal of turbulance in the soul, but to know whether it is the work of the Holy Spirit, His working in the soul will be gentle, softer than snowfall , but the effect can be quite shocking indeed and cause the soul to mourn for their past sins! The Holy Spirit does not do this to punish the soul nor to persecute the soul with their sins, but so that they may come closer to God and in doing so they seek out God’s mercy and love by going to confession and repent of those sins as well as forgiving themselves, then to go on with the intention of following Christ Jesus; this is a conversion experience and can be very profound indeed sometimes shocking not to mention painful. These conversions always deepen faith and draw souls closer to the Father.

Sometimes the Holy Spirit works to enlighten the soul in aspects of faith (three of the gifts of the Holy Spirit being knowledge, wisdom and understanding), say for example some light shed upon the Lord’s Passion, this can be shocking for the soul to realise whatever is revealed to the soul and the soul can be brought to tears and weep for their Lord.

Though this may have been shocking for you to endure it is to the advantage of your soul, everything God does is for love of you. Remember to thank God for this conversion in faith.

The Holy Spirit is Love, it is because of His love He appears to assault the soul sometimes, but infact it is the height of Love for the Father’s children that makes Him fly to the soul and wake them up to His Love, to infuse Divine Love within the soul of His children so that they also Love in the Spirit. Love is always extravagant and sometimes shocking, there is no more shocking an image of Love as Christ upon the Cross for Love of humanity.

Love does not fear and you have nothing to fear.

There is so much to say about this, but I’ll stop there.

You have no need to worry, none at all, you are in God’s hands and His Providence

We should all pray daily for conversion within faith. Come Holy Spirit, Creator come fill the hearts of the faithfulk and kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit, Lord and they shall be created and you shall renew the face of the earth.Amen.

In my prayers.

Shows you how bad my memory is I forgot the rest of the prayer! My apologies.

Here is the prayer in entirity:

Come Holy Spirit, Creator come, fill the hearts of the faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit, Lord, and they shall be created and you shall renew the face of the earth. Let us pray: God, who has taught the hearts of the faithful by the light of the Holy Spirit, grant that by the gifts of the same Spirit, we may be always truly wise and ever rejoice in His consolation. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

But I am sure that God would rather hear the prayers of your own heart than those written by others. 🙂

Great answers and here’s my two cents to add. I have four teenagers and I always preach to them about about NOISE, too much it. I try to remind them to turn down the stereo, TV whatever and listen. One of my favorite passages:

1 Kings 19:11-13

11 The LORD said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the LORD, for the LORD is about to pass by.”
Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. 12 After the earthquake came a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. 13 When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave.
Then a voice said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

To listen to the Holy Spirit we must be quiet. He seems to come when I’m being quiet, and in suttle ways. Thats not to discount the other things here that were said, the Spirit blows where it will, just my experience.
