I caught part of the original or replay of EWTN’s “Family Celebration” back in October of 2008. They have a DVD, which among other features, has Marcus Grodi’s exposition of the Beatitudes from Matthew’s gospel. ($31 total for the dvd and shipping)

His talk is one of those things that I wish everybody could hear. I didn’t have this kind of teaching anytime during my 12 years of Catholic grade school and high school. And, this is remarkable in at least one way, that his talk is based on published homilies that go back to the fourth century.

The idea is that the beatitudes are “steps” in development of discipleship. These are steps which we must exercise every day.

We are called every day to be poor in spirit, to mourn (in a particular sense), to be meek, to hunger and thirst for righteousness, to be merciful, clean of heart, and to be peacemakers. And, we are even called to be and should want to be persecuted for the sake of Christ. For, this way, we possess the kingdom of heaven!

Grodi says that his focus is on his Journey Home program, but that the “steps” of discipleship could be made into an entire series on EWTN, so rich is what is arguably Jesus’ greatest sermon, the sermon on the mount.

Whatever it takes, try to get your hands on this 40 minute talk, it will be worth the effort. Again, all I can say is that I haven’t heard a better and more worthwhile exposition of the Beatitudes.
