There are a lot of people here who have asked me about my religion, and there are some who have no idea what it is. It’s a very small religion, so that’s understandable. Anyway, I would like to tell you a little bit about it.

I am Discordian, which is a 1950’s religion started by Greg Hill, under the pseudonym Mal-2. It is pretty much just what the name says. It’s the devotion to Eris, Greek Goddess of Chaos and Disorder, also known to the Romans as Discordia. We revel in chaos and disorder. This is pretty much the short answer. As opposed to order, we believe chaos and dissent are just as valuable, and we do not believe in absolute morality. The religion itself doesn’t even need to be considered a religion. It’s pretty much whatever the practitioner wants it to be. Most people who are Discordian don’t have it as their sole belief system.

That was just a little background. Now for some of what we believe. The book, the Principia Discordia, is the book that most Discordians have read, and that is what pretty much started the religion. Discordians encourage dissent, schisms, and different sects forming in the religion itself. As a Discordian, I am free to interpret my beliefs any way that I want.
If you want in on the Discordian Society
then declare yourself what you wish
do what you like
and tell us about it
or
if you prefer
don’t.
There are no rules anywhere.
The Goddess Prevails.
I choose to be a solitary Discordian, and have no one but myself in my sect. My sect does focus on dissent, but also more on going against the grain of society, and seeing things as a spectrum, not in black and white. There is no moral absolute, and nothing is black and white. Not even gender. I consider myself gender neutral, and androgynous. I am also bisexual/pansexual. Pansexual is basically being attracted to someone no matter what their gender is, and this includes anyone outside the gender norm. Now, before anyone asks, this only applies to adults.

I am also a Pope: The rights of a Pope include but are not necessarily limited to:
  1. To invoke infallibility at any time, including retroactively.
  2. To completely rework the Erisian church.
  3. To baptise, bury, and marry (with the permission of the deceased in the latter two cases).
  4. To excommunicate, de-ex-communicate, re-ex-communicate, and de-re-ex-communicate (no backsies!) both his-/her-/it-/them-/your-/our-/His-/Her-/It-/Them-/Your-/Our-self/selves and others (if any).
** 5. To perform all rites and functions deemed inappropriate for a Pope of Discordia.**
Notice the last one. It’s all about breaking down the barriers.

Our symbol is the sacred Chao, which is a Yin-Yang, with a pentagram on one side and the Golden Apple on the other.

We also have 5 commandments.

he Pentabarf is the doctrine of Discordianism. It is as follows:
  1. There is no Goddess but Goddess and She is Your Goddess. There is no Erisian Movement but The Erisian Movement and it is The Erisian Movement. And every Golden Apple Corps is the beloved home of a Golden Worm.
  2. A Discordian Shall Always use the Official Discordian Document Numbering System.
  3. A Discordian is required to, the first Friday after his illumination, Go Off Alone & Partake Joyously of a Hot Dog; this Devotive Ceremony to Remonstrate against the popular Paganisms of the Day: of Roman Catholic Christendom (no meat on Friday), of Judaism (no meat of Pork), of Hindic Peoples (no meat of Beef), of Buddhists (no meat of animal), and of Discordians (no Hot Dog Buns).
  4. A Discordian shall Partake of No Hot Dog Buns, for Such was the Solace of Our Goddess when She was Confronted with The Original Snub.
  5. A Discordian is Prohibited from Believing What he reads.
The last one completely disestablishes all of the other commandments. If you are still following me, congratulations, because it’s not easy to follow.

Anyway, there is a lot more to it than just quoting the Principia. To break it down into the simplest terms, it’s simply whatever you want it to be.

🙂

some of the so-called Christian denominations are way ahead of you

You had me for a while there until the end, in which you said that it is whatever you wish for it to be. You’re right, it doesn’t seem like the typical religion. Then again, this is coming from a Buddhist, the religion that’s “only a philosophy” according to some people. 😛

Probably, without even realizing it. I was 18 when I first heard of it, and 19 when I started seriously looking into it. I’ve researched it for a good long while

Well, there could theoretically be Christian Discordians, but probably not. But I do know what you’re talking about. 🙂

Discordianism is actually considered a “Zen” religion, and it does have a lot of similarities to Buddhism in small ways. Like believing that everything is connected.

Inter-connectedness is a part of your religion?

That’s really awesome. Every religion has some portion of the truth, I say.

Just so you know, also, not all Buddhists are Zen. There’s actually quite a few different schools. 👍

Is there any standard by which anything could be considered wrong by your religion? Leaving aside the legal implications for a second.
When I was an atheist, early in the days of the internet, your religion’s presence was overly represented on chat and so forth. Is there any chance we encountered each other online in the mid to late 90s via yahoo chat or other mediums?

Before coming to this forum, I had never heard of it. Thank you for taking the time to explain your religion to us 🙂

I am disturbed by the trend of moral relativism and trying to find a religion that fits “us” rather than fitting ourselves into the religion. Religion should shape us, change us, make us uncomfortable at times, and make us better. It should also seek the truth. And, like Pontius Pilate, we all ask, “what is the truth?” Christ Jesus is the truth and I deeply appreciate the desire of Christians who seek to know a static, meaningful, solid, tangiable truth that isn’t molded, morphed or individualized for people. Truth is like gravity. It can’t be two different things at once. Finding goddesses and existential philosophies or strange cults is only an attempt to legitimize ourselves as a deity of sorts. In what way can this Discordian philosophy truly penetrate, change, challenge, and push the lowly follower into the truth? My two cents…or five…

It would seem a good excuse for justifying selfishness, and could be an effective way of preventing people from finding their way to God.

I should have specified! Opps.:o I’ve actually learned a great deal about Buddhism in college. Also, I have visited a Won Buddhist temple. I don’t know if Won was the school or just the name. I really enjoyed it, and have been meaning to go back. The 30 inches of snow have been impeding my progress :hypno:. I love meditation and have been trying to get into the practice of it. Inter-connectedness is actually a big part of it, for me as a follower. Also, Discordianism is considered a kind of Western Zen.

Your welcome! I was getting asked about it a lot, and I didn’t want to thread-jack any more threads trying to explain myself. 🙂

Well, honestly not sure. For me, there is no absolute morality, but I do follow my own code of ethics, which is basically don’t be a jerk to people, and try to think of others before myself. You would have to ask other Discordians to get a solid idea of morality and ethics, because it’s so varied. I’m positive no Discordian would harm another person or condone (Taking self-defense out of the picture), because there is a belief that everyone is connected. So that is probably the only stipulation.

Is this an absolute?
Maybe I should rephrase that.I do not believe in an absolute morality. But seeing as how the site I checked out doesn’t believe in false dichotomies, most others probably do as well. However, I don’t claim to speak for all Discordians, and I should have specified, which is my fault. I was trying to type fast because my laptop battery died and my charger is broken. Right now I am in the library…

Well for me, it’s also a belief to stop taking life so seriously. One passage from the Principia I love is:
One day Mal-2 asked the messenger spirit Saint Gulik to approach the Goddess and request Her presence for some desperate advice. Shortly afterwards the radio came on by itself, and an ethereal female Voice said YES?
Code:
"O! Eris! Blessed Mother of Man! Queen of Chaos! Daughter of Discord! Concubine of Confusion! O! Exquisite Lady, I beseech You to lift a heavy burden from my heart!"
Code:
WHAT BOTHERS YOU, MAL? YOU DON'T SOUND WELL.
Code:
"I am filled with fear and tormented with terrible visions of pain. Everywhere people are hurting one another, the planet is rampant with injustices, whole societies plunder groups of their own people, mothers imprison sons, children perish while brothers war. O, woe."
Code:
WHAT IS THE MATTER WITH THAT, IF IT IS WHAT YOU WANT TO DO?
Code:
"But nobody wants it! Everybody hates it."
Code:
    OH. WELL, THEN STOP.
Code:
At which moment She turned herself into an aspirin commercial and left The Polyfather stranded alone with his species.
It’s basically saying take matters into our own hands. If we hate the way the world is, work to change it.

It would seem a good excuse for justifying selfishness, and could be an effective way of preventing people from finding their way to God.
Just because I am Discordian doesn’t mean I am selfish. I give blood, donate to charities, do service work, help my friends when they need it. I’d do anything for people I care about, and for things I care about. I try to be a good person, and help people. 🙂
