I requested a free sample of Magnificat devotional magazine and it arrived recently. It is wonderful! It will help me follow all the Masses (weekdays and Sundays), and it also has lots of devotional material, information on saints, and so on.

The only problem is the price. A one-year subscription is around $45, and that’s way out of our family budget. Does anyone know if discounts are available?

Um - have you asked them?

No, I haven’t. Perhaps I was hoping someone would know of a website/bookstore/etc. that offers single issues or subscriptions at a discounted price. I apologize for having confused you.

Buying them individually is way more expensive, But the longer your subscription, the cheaper, and if you buy a higher quantity… Maybe you could get a few people to go in on it you know?

I do love the Magnificat. But I haven’t seen any discounts. I did see this on the website, if you have an iphone… magnificat.com/iphoneus/index.asp The App is free and then you pay $1.99 per month. Not too bad for folks with an iphone… (I don’t have one! :p)

The Word of Among Us is also great and it has the Mass Readings too. It costs $35. wau.org/amember

I would hate to be seen reading from an iPhone at Mass though!! Not sure the world is quite ready for that just yet.

The Magnificat is a lovely publication. For what is included it is quite reasonable. If you break it down to a monthly cost it will be less than $4 a month, less than a dollar a week. They offer renewal and gift discounts.

I was told by an old Priest some time ago that fees for classes, publications (including books), that are to further your religious education, devotion, etc. can be applied to your monetary obligation within reason. You will be supporting a service that supports the Church in one form or another.

Just some food for thought. I use this publication and would be lost without it. Do keep in mind, it is a foreign publication and the daily readings are sometimes not the same.

With God’s graces…

Thank you, everyone, for your responses and advice. I really appreciate it! 👍

That is interesting about the Iphone link. As I have an Ipod touch, I probably can use that link and get the magazine for half price. I wouldn’t bring my Ipod touch to Mass, but I could read Magnificat at home and save the costs.

I really like the magazine and read it daily. However it is expensive and I’m trying to save money as our daughter is a junior in high school, and looking at several (expensive) colleges.

Now as for getting the print version for a reduced price, the only time I’ve seen this is was in my former Parish’s Church bulletin. They had a Men’s study group and they were offering Magnificat for a rate which was much cheaper than I have seen anywhere else. Apparantly if a Parish uses it and orders in bulk, they get their Magnificat subscriptions at a reduced rate, which they then can pass on the individual readers. I don’t recall exactly what the subscription rate was if you joined the Men’s group but it was about half of the regular subscription rate.

I’m 70 years old and use an app for Confession. The first time I used it in the confessional, my Priest was curious and amazed. Symbolism of “throwing my sins into the garbage” seems so cool to me.

I am considering getting the Magnificat for my iPhone.

It’s all about getting with the times! So I, for one, see no problem.
