Why does Herod think Jesus is John raised from the dead in verse 2, when he is not beheaded until verse 10?

Are we to assume John was dead at the beginning of this account, hence Herod’s thoughts, and Matthew is simply explaining further in the chapter how John actually came to be dead in the first place?

Sort of like, ‘Herod thought Jesus was John raised from the dead, because he’d had John killed in this way…’

Maybe I’m picking verses apart too much!:o

It looks like v3-14 explained WHY he thought it was John back from the dead.

Ancient Jews did not write history the way we do where events are provided in chronological order. They were more interested in teachings. In Luke 1:3 Luke writes, “it seemed fitting for me as well, having investigated everything carefully from the beginning, to write it out for you in consecutive order, most excellent Theophilus…” Note he specifies that he is writing the events in the order in which they occurred. Luke, of course, was a Gentile.

…your latter point is correct–what I find interesting is how Herod puts together supernatural power with Yahweh God’s servants–even death cannot stop God!
