First you have to promise to stop posting that dog photo. 😉
I own two dogs. One of them is a Basset Hound. 👍 So, what belief do you want to examine in the light of Scripture? And please do not say sola scriptura. Let’s start with simple things such as Peter having a wife, or Mary being a sinner, or something like that. I am asking that the Roman Catholic Christian play the role of a Protestant Christian.

Basset Hounds are the best dogs!

In what way do you want Catholics to play the role of Protestants? Do you want us to indulge in serious role-play, or do you want us to play Devil’s advocate, or what? What kind of Protestant position do you want Catholics to hold to? There’s only thousands of different interpretations of Scripture out there, and no one single “Protestant” interpretation.

Also, are you going to include a photo of a basset hound with every post? How would a basset hound interpret Scripture?

I think we both know that the Catholic Magestrium only officially interprets a few Scriptures for you. Therefore, the Magestrium gives you room for varying interpretations, correct? I guess you don’t own a Basset Hound. Do you like dogs? Let’s just take one belief at a time and search the scriptures together as Christians. I will drop the Protestant label, and maybe you can drop your Catholic guard. We both believe the Bible to be the Word of God. Therefore, let’s just enjoy the Scriptures together as Christians. I know our presuppositions we be an obstacle for all of us.

Let me start with an example. I believe Peter had a wife because Jesus healed Peter’s mother-in-law who later served the disciples. Do you agree that this is recorded in the Scriptures?

Hmmm, no, I don’t go along with that premise, actually. All of Scripture can be read in light of Catholic teaching.

I don’t go along with that premise, either. Anyway, you’re not asking us to interpret Scripture as a Catholic would, right? You said you want us to play Protestant. I think it’s fair to ask what kind of Protestant you’d like us to play. Anglicans have different beliefs than Presbyterians who have different beliefs than Baptists who have different beliefs than SDAs who have different beliefs from … get the picture? 🙂

Yes, I love dogs. I used to be a professional dog groomer, in fact. We don’t currently own a dog, because our last one died just as I got pregnant, and we want to wait until our son is a little older before getting another one.

ETA: Argh, you edited your post substantially while I was replying. Let me start over. Give me some time.

Well, we need some of the Roman Catholics to verify my statement regarding only a few Scriptures are interpreted officially by the Magestrium. There is more breathing room with Roman Catholicism then what most people think. I guess the dog photo got your attention.

There are so many different protestant beliefs on scripture b/c protestantism is so de-centralized. Asked to role-play as a protestant, as you do in your post, I wouldn’t know where to begin.

I’m not asking you to interpret according to Protestant beliefs. Please discuss the Scriptures according to your personal beliefs. I know there is fear with many Roman Catholics to read the Scriptures for themselves. But let’s try it. God is pleased when you mediate on His Word day and night.

How about the sinless nature of Mary. Why do you personally believe or not believe that doctrine?? If you answer because the church taught me that then please try to give an explanation as to why the church teaches that. It should lead right to a discussion of Luke.

I have to go take care of my son, so I will return to this thread in a while. But before I go, can I give you a suggestion? Assumptions like the one you make just above are dangerous, and honestly, it comes off as extremely condescending. I think you’ll find that the Catholics in this forum know their scriptures pretty darned well. See you later …

Wow. I never heard of that. I don’t believe that there is “fear with many Catholics to read the Scriptures for themselves”.

I am what they call a “cradle Catholic” and I have always been encouraged to read the Bible, by my parents, priests, nuns, lay resligious educators, friends. After all, it is a Catholic document.

So stop beating around the bush and dive into something. Why do we always derail the threads 🤷

Pick a topic and let’s discuss interpretations of scripture and learn from one another:)

Scripture declares all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. In addition, Romans 5 clearly teaches that Adam’s sin was imputed to all mankind, including Mary. And we are familiar with the gospel of Luke, with Mary rejoicing in her savior. Only sinners need a savior. Plus Galatians 2 teaches that if we can get to Heaven by our own righteousness, then Christ died in vain. So, within the context of Scriptures, how does a Roman Catholic believe Mary was without sin?

Reformed,

I’d like to point out that you are telling us what we believe. Are you an ex-Catholic? How do you know what Catholics believe?

God Bless,

I’m glad you are angry. I hope that emotion will drive you to the Scriptures. Please consider wresting with the Scirptures for yourself and compare it to what Rome teaches.

Acts 17:11

Now Ibkc of more noble character than the other Roman Catholic Christians, for she received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.

I attend a Bible study once a week and I read scriptures everyday. I compare scriptures with the teachings of the Church all the time.

What’s your point?

What makes you the authority on what Catholics believe? I’ll ask again, are you ex-Catholic? What source do you offer to support your assertion that 1 billion Catholics don’t know what they are suppose to believe?

That’s a decent start but I will give one more to add to that.

Growing up in the Roman Catholic church we were always taught Mary was full of grace taken right from Luke 1:28. The greek word used there is charitoo. The problem with using this verse to define Mary as sinless is that charitoo is also used to describe the Ephesians in Paul’s letter. The difference is the way the word is conjugated. In Luke the word is conjugated in the past tense as Kecharitomene. This literally means one who has been highly favoured with an emphasis on has been. Meaning it was a past action. But the problem is you can’t define when it happened. It could have been the day before or the day Mary was born etc.

Charitoo in Ephesians is conjugated in the present tense which is written as echaritosen. So basically Paul was letting the Ephesians know they were now highly favoured by GOD which is why HE sent Jesus to us. So if you are going to say that Mary was sinless because she is described as being graced using the word charitoo then you have to apply the same condition to the Ephesians. But the problem is 2 Ephesians tells us that they were sinful people. So did they suddenly become completely sinless from that point forward? I think not because then Paul would not tell be telling them the need for Christ.

The biggest mistake made with transliterating Kecharitomene to full of grace by Jerome is that the word simply does not mean full of grace. Stephen and Jesus Christ are the only 2 people described as being full of grace using pleres charitos which literally means full of grace.

PEACE
