Glory to Jesus Christ!

I would like the community’s thoughts regarding the following:

My eight year old daughter is in Brownies. There is a weekend camp coming up lasting from Friday to Sunday afternoon. This would obviously make it impossible to attend Liturgy. I am uncertain whether it is a good decision to let her go.

Would it be possible to go to a Roman Catholic Mass on Sunday evening? Most dioceses seem to have at least a couple parishes with evening Masses.

Otherwise, I would pick her up a little early and go to Liturgy on Sunday morning. That’s my 2 cents.

Agree.

a) evening mass
b) pick up early
c) explain situation to leaders - they may take her?

What do you do when you are on holiday?

…or ask you priest for a dispensation…if he denies, ask for guidance; perhaps one of the other fine suggestions made by others here.

Well that explains why they don’t consider Sunday as an obvious day for families needing to be together in church into their itinerary.
I agree. A big red flag goes up for me when I hear about that organization.

And no matter what the situation, isn’t it a witness when we show others about our Catholic focus that the Mass is the source and summit of our Catholic faith?

I do understand that there are times when people are traveling and circumstances do not allow for Mass to be attended.

My parents never let us miss mass, ever. We traveled all around the world as a family and I remember, where we would attend mass, in whatever city we were in, was already pre-panned into the itinerary. I use to hate it growing up. I would complain and say " but we are on vacation!!!" My parents would gently explain to me the importance, but I didn’t care lol but as an adult I look back on that and I think wow! My parents were amazing, I’m so so proud of them and what they did for us as a family and honoring God. They truly lead by example and it was worth it because it resonates deep with me today.

As a Boyscout my parents let me do that all the time. I think it will be fine but if you want her to got to Mass then she can’t go on the camo out

My parents let me miss Mass when I was on Boyscouts but that doesn’t mean it was the right thing to do

Was it a Catholic-based troop? Because we used to have our chaplain go with us if we were gone for Sunday.

Thank you all for your responses so far. Yes, Brownies is a part of Girl Scouts. Yes, there is some controversy about the organization as a whole; however, I would like to leave that discussion for another day. The camping trip is for the entire council not just her troop. I did not think to ask if their would be a priest on hand for Sunday, so I will inquire into that.

As for Sunday afternoon: Yes, there are many Latin Rite churches in town with afternoon masses. However, I would most likely not be able to take her as she would be with her mother who has sadly become indifferent to the faith since she left.

Also, I believe most of the responses have been from the western viewpoint of mass obligation. I intend no offense, but I deliberately posted to the Eastern Catholicism forum for an eastern point of view. Those of western spirituality are more than welcome to share their thoughts, but I would really appreciate some (name removed by moderator)ut from those of the eastern persuasion.

God bless.

If it were me in your situation, and if I believed I was giving the girl a solid formation in the faith so this wasn’t a regular occurrence in my house, I would ask if there is a Mass available and if not see if I could coordinate for one to be available for the camp. If that wasn’t an option, I’d consider the schedule and if it would be problematic to take her to a nearby Mass and drop her back off to finish the day. If it would be a significant burden to them, her, or me so that wasn’t a good solution, I’d teach her how to ask her priest for a blessing to miss Liturgy because of her travels and lack of church availability.

Camping without access to a nearby church, and the parent in charge at the time of a later access being unwilling to transport to it, does put your daughter in a position of asking for a blessing to not attend. We all come across these situations where the logistics can’t easily work out. That her mother could make it work doesn’t change your daughter’s reality that her mother won’t, which means she doesn’t have access to church if she goes camping as currently planned. Going on a weekend camping trip that doesn’t have easy church access is reasonable for your daughter to expect. You don’t have to overcompensate for her mother’s lack of faith formation.

If the priest didn’t think it was a good idea for her to go and miss Liturgy and didn’t give his blessing, I’d explain to her that the options appeared to be not going or going but leaving early enough to make it to church. I’d let her suggest alternatives and choose whichever of the moral choices was present. The goal should be empowering her by giving the needed guidance and support to allow her to make the right decisions. That’s how I would go about doing it.

Praise be to God for your reply, CDB1718. It has helped me see the forest as I tend to focus on the trees. Thank you, everyone.

God bless!

For my child, the Faith ALWAYS comes first, and the obligation to God to comes far far before any other activity. My 2 cents.

How would the “Eastern point of view” differ? I am aware that in particular sui iuris churches Saturday Vespers may fulfill the obligation, but that is not under discussion. (BTW, my husband is Ruthenian, and on the board of the Byzantine Catholic Seminary…)
