I was just listening to Catholic Answers Live.*The exorcist priest about whom a recent film on exorcism was based is the guest. He mentioned “disembodied spirits”. What are they? The Jesuits never told me about any such thing and that was back in the day before the Jesuits went off the reservation.

Many thanks,
Dick Fell

Spirits that once had bodies? Makes no sense. Fallen angels and angels have no bodies but never had bodies to disembody.
I’m guessing the non elect that have died and are awaiting their ultimate destination when Jesus comes again. Prowling around with the demons to steal souls.
It’s a guess, but then again it could be just a bunch of nonsense too.

This is not Catholic teaching. (I realize you’re not Catholic – at this time – but if you have Catholic leanings, I hope to help you lean in the right direction.) The Church teaches that we are judged at the instant of death, and go immediately to our eternal reward: heaven, purgatory (which ultimately means heaven, since all the souls in purgatory are saved by definition) or hell.

There have been cases where departed souls – both saved and damned – have apparently been allowed to appear to the living (e.g., souls in purgatory appearing to the living to beg prayers). God can certainly permit this and make it possible when He judges best.

I’m glad for the help here, and clarity on the issue.

So, we can rule out the fallen angels as being a cause of this demonic possession then?
And there are at least cases where a disembodied spirit, who I am guessing is one that is judged damned that appears to the living.

So, how do we jump from the appears to the living to demonic possesion? I am just wondering how this happens.

Probably from me not reading the original question carefully enough.

Demonic possession is caused by – demons. But the souls of human beings who have died go straight to their eternal reward. I don’t think the term “disembodied spirits” necessarily has to mean spirits that once had bodies (such as the souls of the dead). I think it can also mean spirits that have always been without bodies, like the fallen angels.

“Demonic” possession can only be executed by fallen angels.

Dead human beings cannot “possess” anybody because they are not alive (in this timeframe) to do so. They go on to Eternity.

While “disembodied” literally means deprived of one’s body; the term is often used as a synonym for “bodiless.” This would include fallen angels.

God Bless and ICXC NIKA.

Disembodied can mean deprived of one’s body and can also mean deprived of a body one was never given from the very start, and was created without?

Forgive my ignorance on not understanding the nuances.

Hey, I did not say the usage was correct. But the terms are used as synonyms.

Due to the creepiness of the words’ meanings, I doubt this pair of words will ever come to the attention of English teachers to correct.

GEddie,

I actually thought of a way to make this make sense just now. I was hoping to explain it.

I know you did not say the usage was correct, and I was not calling you out.

But, I did see a way one could use it.

One way that would be good, one that would not be.

One way I could go with it is, the bible does say the angels are lesser than humans.
This could then be taken to say that they were created purposefully to be defective, because the pinnicle of creation was the human.
They were simply less than from the very start.
So, calling them disembodied is fine then. Because creation was meant to have a body, and they were deprived of one and that is how they were disembodied. They were always created as second class creations.
It’s a class system and that makes sense.
