how would i explain dis-fellowshipping is wrong or unbiblical?

I am not sure about this, and can’t really find answer. How would I talk to a JW about this?

Basically when a Jehovah’s witness is Shunned or ex communicated.

Well its in the bible as the thing to do with people who aren’t living right so your not going to be able to.

“And we charge you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you withdraw yourselves from every brother walking disorderly, and not according to the tradition which they have received of us.” 2 Thess 3:6

Hmm… I just didn’t see it as right for a whole congregation to shun one person, and the family.

Well, I guess the JW’s are right on this one.

I’m not trying to be flippant, but you’ve answered your own question.

It “is wrong and unbiblical”. 😛

I merely explained that Jesus didn’t associate with the elite of society, but known sinners.

St. Paul in the Bible thinks otherwise:

“And we charge you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you withdraw yourselves from every brother walking disorderly, and not according to the tradition which they have received of us.” 2 Thess 3:6

Of course the JW’s themselves don’t walk according to the traditions of the Apostles, that is where they go wrong, been shunned by them is a blessing, I wish I could get them to shun me lol

I’m not sure if this is going to be helpful exactly, but Matthew 15:15-18 says,
But if thy brother shall offend against thee, go, and rebuke him between thee and him alone. If he shall hear thee, thou shalt gain thy brother. And if he will not hear thee, take with thee one or two more: that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may stand. And if he will not hear them: tell the church. And if he will not hear the church, let him be to thee as the heathen and publican. Amen I say to you, whatsoever you shall bind upon earth, shall be bound also in heaven; and whatsoever you shall loose upon earth, shall be loosed also in heaven.
I think, therefore, that the approach may be to explain why a heathen shouldn’t necessarily be shunned (e.g. because evangelization becomes impossible, etc.). Why are you trying to disprove disfellowshipping?

I agree its one thing to make decision for yourself, I just was shocked when I heard a whole congregation did it because a higher person in the organization said so.

Excellent Point!

Thank you.

Catholic Chruch used to do the same, a excommunication vitandi we call it.

I wanted to share that there may be other ways of handling things, instead of dis- fellowship a friend of his. I realized it was none of my business though.

I wanted to see what the stance on this was with the Catholic Church. I really didn’t know what to think of it, right or wrong?

Some Old Order Amish do it also… they have been known to shun baptized members who break the *Ordnung *(the church laws) and even their own families will have nothing to do with them. They will only allow them to return after a kneeling confession, either before the church elders or before the entire community.

Although it’s not written from a Catholic p.o.v., this article by former JW’s addresses the issue of shunning from a biblical perspective:

Also, this website is extremely helpful for someone in discussion with a member of the Jehovah’s Witnesses.
