The 4th commandments commands us to honor our father and mother.
If I speak with my friend and vent to them about my frustrations with something my parents said or did, is that disrespectful? I’ve done this often with one of my best friends. We tell each other everything. I’ve never conspired with her to disobey my parents but simply told her how I feel or if I’m hurt or annoyed with my parents.
I do not spread falsehoods and I do try to not get angry and hateful towards my parents.

Thank you! I was a bit confused between gossiping and all the other types of sin against others when it comes to spreading lies and I didn’t want to be doing that. I always make sure to let my friend know that I am obeying my parents but that perhaps I disagree or just need a listening ear.

Venting about your parents is normal. My parents made sure we had safe people to talk to to say how horrible they are. I have been that person for my friend’s children, and when my children are teens, I will make sure that they have safe people to talk to about what an out-of-touch mean mom I am. Parents who expect children to never complain are unrealistic.

I would just advise you not to vent your dissatisfaction with your parents with your friends. You can talk to them about what your parents did which you do not agree with but do not disparage them in front of your friends.

There is differences in the two.

On the surface, no, there’s nothing wrong. But realize that there’s a reeeeeeaallllly fine line between “just venting” and slandering someone’s character. To avoid the latter, it may be best to pose it as seeking advice on how to handle a situation.

Thank you. I do try to keep it to the level of just telling her what happened and why I might feel upset. Not saying I hate them or saying that they are always wrong or that it’s all their fault. Usually it is for advice or just so she knows what I’m going through.

I think we all need this at times.

Perspective is healthy.

Even as a married adult I sometimes need perspective from a guy on the goofy things that my husband does that make me go “wut?”

I don’t badmouth him and I’m careful not to do that. But you know, there are some things that you just need an outside perspective on…like why farts are funny to a 30yo man.

Thank you all for your replies.

I think it’s also that gossip and other sin of words against others confuses me. On one hand, I know people need to vent and sometimes people need a listening ear. However, somethings that people need to get off their chest might also hurt another person if word gets around. (I don’t every try to spread rumors about people or tell secrets I’ve been told) So, do we just bottle up our emotions or only tell people we trust?

As a man over 30, sometimes they just are funny.

The older one gets, the frequency of finding humor in them diminishes.

I guess it is one if the differences between the sexes that are no longer supposed to exist.
