I was a designated Driver last night (10/28), Some friends said that they were going to go out clubing and I just said I would be their driver. Anyway after they got totally thrashed and I took them home (with great difficulty) it occured to me that, if I am not mistaken, getting drunk is a sin. Did I screw up by volenteering to be a D.D. so they could go out and drink? Thanks and God bless.

There’s a difference between getting sinfully drunk and merely drinking an amount which would put one over the legal limit to drive. Sometimes it takes very little drinking indeed to do the latter, but a DD would still be required.

Besides which, you weren’t in control of how much your friends drank, and your being a DD may not have been a factor at all. I used to drink and get taxis everywhere instead!

You just might have saved a life by being the DD in this case. Ask yourself if they would have gone out, drank as much and still have driven home if you had not been there.

IMHO enabling is helping someone do something they would not have done if you did not help them do it.

I’ve acted as a DD a couple of times formerly (I was asked) and other times unofficially (I was going to drink anyway). I don’t think that it was a sin when you did or I did this. Our friends and others were safer because of this.

I found the excersize to be rather informative. It was watching some of my friends being drunk when I was younger that convinced me I didn’t want to act that way so I rarely would drink. I’m fortunate now that my friends’ behavior while drunk isn’t out of control or (too) embarrassing. I don’t know what I would do in that situation. I would not want to be around people who were going to get in fights or do something criminal.

:amen: nothing like being the only sober person (or even the soberest person) of a bunch who are completely off their face to turn you off the idea of getting drunk!

Yeah, I spent a semester in undergrad serving as sober DD for a group of friends and acquaintances. It taught me that 1) there was no point in drinking that much, all it caused was poor decision-making and vomit, and 2) I was the only one out of the entire group who was trustworthy enough to be the DD. Needless to say, I didn’t hang out with them much after that.

I am most often the DD when I do things with some of my friends (and family). I’ve never thought of it as wrong, but more of an act of mercy. Besides, Jesus is the friend of sinners and drunkards, remember?

As a side note - I was once the DD to a concert with a group of friends and it was something that I didn’t particularly want to do, and then I realized that they’re stuck with me for duration of the drive so I used it as an opportunity to witness to them and everytime I’m out with a friend who drinks too much I’ve made it a point to call them early the next morning and see how they’re doing 🙂 they don’t ask me to be their DD that often anymore…

They are going to get trashed whether they have a DD or not. I don’t see being a DD so much as a sin, but more a form of penance. It is a job that gets old in a hurry.

This thread brought back a grin-memory from my Air Force tech school days. It involved a big Chevy station wagon (not mine), and a couple of guys who were getting drunk for the first time in their lives (not me). I won’t go into details, but the next day those two were out washing the outside of the station wagon, where they had…never mind.

Cool!

One of my favorite DD experiences was driving a group of Air Force friends from Sheppard AFB to Dallas to see Guns’N’Rose’s and Metallica in concert at the Cotton Bowl!

Go Air Force!
