Disinfecting for strep question

All 4 of my children tested positive for strep and so I need to disinfect toys. I have never done this before, I’ve never bought a bottle of bleach. Do you think I can just run the duplo blocks and other lightweight plastic toys in piping hot water through a delicate cycle on my washer machine? Then I wouldn’t have to hang out at the kitchen sink all afternoon bleaching and re-washing the toys. Also, how much bleach should I use?

Thanks in advance. I think all battery-operated toys or anything that can’t be fully submerged is just gonna have to go in the trash. I’m not real big on the commercial cleaners, I’m concerned about the chemicals when the baby puts everything in his mouth (even though this is how his sitter cleans). I know I could disinfect and then go back and wash off the commercial cleaner w/ hot soapy water, just trying to consider the simplest way to tackle this. All bedding has already been washed in hot water.

Unless your kids are putting the toys in their mouths, I’m a bit curious as to why you’d need to disinfect everything. Strep normally resides in the mouth and is transmitted through oral contact (for example, in the case of your children, it could be transmitted through drinking out of the same glass).

I’m not an expert, but I know strep don’t survive very well in salt. I’m wondering if washing your blocks in salty, soapy water would be helpful.
 
My 4 older children (ages 4, 6 and 8) aren’t any concern, but I have an 11mo who is in the prime stages of everything-in-the-mouth. I actually just found an article that suggests if washed in hot soapy water, bleaching/disinfecting is not necessary. I think I’m gonna go w/ this theory!

Any other recommendations/suggestions welcome, thanks!
 
Bottles of bleach usually have instructions on the label for how to wash toys (how much water to mix with how much bleach). I’d probably soak whatever I could in the bleach solution and then use antibacterial wipes on the larger or electronic toys, and then wipe them down with a washcloth and some hot water if you’re concerned about the baby putting things in his mouth. Maybe wash any stuffed animals, too.

Also, don’t forget about toothbrushes- I’d throw those away and get new ones if you haven’t already!
 
These are the things that will kill Streptococcus pyogenes:

SECTION IV – STABILITY AND VIABILITY

DRUG SUSCEPTIBILITY: S. pyogenes infections are susceptible to a variety of drugs: β-lactams such as penicillin, as well as erythromycin, clindamycin, imipenem, rifampin, vanomycin, macrolides and lincomycin; however, certain strains of the bacterium have been found to resistant to macrolides, lincomycin, chloramphenicol, tetracyclines and cotrimoxazole (5, 7, 19, 20).

SUSCEPTIBILITY TO DISINFECTANTS: This bacteria is susceptible to 1% sodium hypochlorite, 4% formaldehyde, 2% glutaraldehyde, 70% ethanol, 70% propanol, 2% peracetic acid, 3-6% hydrogen peroxide and 0,16% iodine (2).

PHYSICAL INACTIVATION: Bacteria are susceptible to moist heat (121 ºC for at least 15 minutes) and dry heat (170 ºC for at least 1 hour) (21).

SURVIVAL OUTSIDE HOST: The bacterium can survive on a dry surface for 3 days to 6.5 months (22). It has been found to survive in ice cream (18 days), raw and pasteurized milk at 15-37 ºC (96 hrs), room temperature butter (48 hrs), and neutralized butter (12-17 days) (17). GAS has been found to last several days in cold salads at room temperature (18).

The truth, is though, that contact with dry contaminated items is not a major mode of transmission. Transmission usually occurs via damp contact:

MODE OF TRANSMISSION: Transmission via respiratory droplets, hand contact with nasal discharge and skin contact with impetigo lesions are the most important modes of transmission (5, 9, 13). The pathogen can be found in its carrier state in the anus, vagina, skin and pharynx and contact with these surfaces can spread the infection (5, 14, 15) The bacterium can be spread to cattle and then back to humans through raw milk as well as through contaminated food sources (salads, milk, eggs); however, cattle do not contract the disease (16-18). Necrotizing fasciitis is usually because of contamination of skin lesions or wounds with the infectious agent (12).

I would not bleach all your children’s toys, and I certainly would not consider the inner electronic spaces a likely reservoir for infection. If your child didn’t spit on it or wipe snot on it, it is highly unlikely to be contaminated. If our doctor advised disinfection (has yours?), I’d probably spray with Everclear (95% ethanol) or 70% proponol since it will remove itself by evaporation, doesn’t harm dyes as bleach does (sodium hypochlorite, the active ingredient in household bleach, is a powerful oxidant)and is unlikely to disfigure the toy or ruin any surface coatings. If you feel you must disinfect, you don’t need to go nuclear and ruin the toys! Heating in an oven at its lowest possible setting (most ovens don’t go below 180 degrees) might be an option for some items, but electronics will not take kindly to it.

In our state, food-grade 95% ethanol can be purchased in liquor stores by asking for it. It is not kept out for display, because of the young people who make bad use of it. I would think that 70% proponol would be cheaper, though. Whatever you choose, test in an inconspicuous place first, in case the disinfectant isn’t safe for that surface.

The truth is, if your children’s toys have been left to dry for a week or two since they last played with them, you probably couldn’t get a swab to grow that strep out if you had blood agar. The most likely reservoir is not those toys, but your kids themselves, who will be immune but could still be carriers.** Enforcing good hygiene habits on your kids and their friends is where your epidemiological efforts ought to be concentrated!**
 
Children under age 2 rarely get strep. Antibiotics (as directed) for everyone affected should be sufficient.
 
As others have said, the transferring of Strep through things like the duplo blocks is really low on the scale of concern. However, it is a good idea to clean toys like that on occasion, and it isn’t difficult at all! Just fill your sink with hot water, add 1/4 c bleach OR 1 c white vinegar, pour in the toys and let 'em soak. After 20 minutes, drain the sink, give the toys a rinse and lay them out on a towel to dry. 👍
 
If you have a serious need to keep things clean, such as someone in your home carrying Hepatitis C, be sure to ask your doctor for resources about how to keep your home safe without using unnecessary damage, using unnecessarily high amounts or ineffective amounts of product, or taking more time or using more heat than is necessary. You also ought to ask your doctor whether disinfecting items that have been allowed to dry for several days is even necessary. It depends on the microbial organism you are concerned about and the level of immunity in each person in your home. (You do need to be a bit more careful with those under two or over 65.)

An effective level of chemical disinfectant usually kills within 5 minutes, but needs at least a minute or two to work effectively. If, however, the disinfectant is an oxidizing agent, such as bleach and peroxide are, adding contact time with the item you are disinfecting might only be oxidizing your item without making it any safer, fading out the color and/or weakening its structural integrity.
 
I wouldn’t put plastic toys in the washing machine, especially duplo blocks. They could get sucked into the tubing.

If you have a dish washer, you could throw them in there, top rack preferably.

Clorox makes a spray called, “Everywhere spray.” It’s non toxic and kills bacteria. It sort of smells like a cross between sea water and hydrogen peroxide.
