I’m almost afraid to reply because I risk being labeled one of those “mean ol’ posters” on here, but my question is if he was hurt so much to the point of making his last post on here (post #12) the way he did or even (reportedly) going “Baptist and Anti-Catholic”, was he of a sound emotional/mental state to be a Deacon?

He probably was sound, but from the cold treatment he got it may have become too much. In my experience, those who were once devout Catholics but then go Anti become that way because of deep wounds… How we treat others is important.

Very true. But don’t blame the church for human failings. If that were the case saints like St. Pio, St John Vianney and Verable Solanus Casey…who received beyond cold treatment…would have left the church. Either way he is in my prayers.

And to be put down like he was in some of the responses to his posts, that is not good.
I remember participating in this thread. I don’t feel Benedictine was initially put down as such, but he was challenged. From what you say, those challenges were more than he could easily deal with, which is perhaps a more general problem for him (and for many people, for that matter). It sounds, from his account, like a difficulty with being challenged might have been the reason he was dismissed from the ordination programme. But it’s unknowable in the final analysis because we weren’t there.

I’m going to come off sounding harsh here - for which I apologise in advance - but: I think if you’re going to resurrect the thread like this, it would be helpful to be specific about any criticisms you have of posts made rather than issuing a general admonition. I don’t think that helps Benedictine or any other reader.🤷
Keep Benedictine in prayer and hopefully he will make his way back.
I would repeat what I said at the time:
Benedictine’s experience may have been abusive, or it may have been simply very hurtful. In either event I am sorry for his distress and crisis of faith.
Prayers and best wishes to both of you.

It is absolutely essential that a person who is in a leadership position be able to deal well with criticism. If he was not able to deal well with criticism, then this could have easily been the reason for his dismissal, all by itself.

It seems to me that if ONE person not agreeing with him 100% is enough to make him leave the Church, they made the right decision. What would have happened if a parishioner didn’t like his homily? If a pastor corrected something he said or did?
I am with you I would also wonder about someone who could so easily leave the One true Faith over the actions of one person because i have been in a simillar situation at my parish although it had nothing to do with becoming a deacon because i am a woman but it was a situation with a person not liking me

It is inappropriate to speak about another person when he is not around to defend himself. It’s called gossip.

Thomas, I apologize. I didn’t resurrect this conversation (no excuse) but I figured, since the OP is still a member of CAF and possibly still subscribed to his own thread he might be able to join in the conversation (or defend himself). Maybe closing the thread would be the answer.

I’ll not contribute to this thread any further. Happy Easter.
