I think they named it “Infinity” because that is how deep the hole is into which you can toss your money. No matter how much you throw in, there’s always room for more.
I’m surprised it took this long for someone else to follow the Skylander’s model. Disney certainly has a gigantic pool of characters to choose from. They can be releasing toys and expansion packs “to infinity and beyond.”
I refuse to inform my children of the existence of this game. I don’t think I could afford it.
A few years back, a video game franchise called “Skylanders” started and has been hugely succesful. Basically, not only do you buy the video game, but you buy a “portal” stand and limitless extra action figure type toys. You then place the toys on the portal and they show up in the video game. Each subsequent game in the series continues to use all the old toys and then introduces an entirely new batch of toys.
Disney has picked up on this with Disney Infinity and is doing it with toys for all the various Disney characters (Mr. Incredible, Sully from Monsters Inc., Captain Jack Sparrow, etc.).
It really is one of those ideas where I’m amazed no one thought of it sooner. Kids like video games. Kids like toys. Put them together and voila! It’s a license to print money. Skylanders has already earned more than half a billion dollars in just the past two years. If Disney does this well, I’m sure they can make just as much.
