He is really trying to work me over on Purgatory. He always says rightly dividing the word and there are diferernt gospels for different audiences. Some relate to kingdom of heaven and others to the church on earth.

Has anyone ever talked to a dispensationalist? How do you combat their views?
Peet,

You may not know it but when you talk to most Evangelicals they are closet dispensationalists. The Evangtelica Free Church has dispensationalism in their statement of Faith…

Christ’s Return
9. We believe in the personal, bodily and premillennial return of our Lord Jesus Christ. The coming of Christ, at a time known only to God, demands constant expectancy and, as our blessed hope, motivates the believer to godly living, sacrificial service and energetic mission.
Most of the folks from the Evangelical Free Church pay little attention to it believing that they are just sharing Jesus and the love of Christ. It is Christianity lite where the Doctrines are less important than a relationship with Christ. They are ecumenical believing that they are bringing some message to you…ignoring that they deny the effects of Baptism and the celebration of the Eucharist…
The Lord Jesus mandated two ordinances, baptism and the Lord’s Supper, which visibly and tangibly express the gospel. Though they are not the means of salvation, when celebrated by the church in genuine faith, these ordinances confirm and nourish the believer.
This causes them to manifest a Baptist appearance…however in conversation with an Evangelical they go right to how important a relationship with Jesus is…

I suggerst that they consider that if having a relationship with Jesus is important then should I not reject the Book of Mormon, The Pearl of Great Price, and Doctrines and Covenants as well for those other guys that believe they have a relationship with Christ.

If he uses his own belief in “Scripture Alone” the whole system falls apart. He can’t attack Purgatory when his whole theology is extra-Biblical. He’s contridicting himself.
Ask him those questions and watch him squirm.

Peet,

Here are some basics. Never respond to the Dispensationlist as they pose their question…if he is working you over on Purgatory…take a look here. Post 632.

Purgatory is a belief that I have and did you know that the Oriental Orthodox, Eastern Orthodox and Protestants pray for the dead?

The first thing you have to do is take control of the conversation. The way you do that is to reframe it. The issue is Dispensationalism. He brings up Purgatory…acknowledge what is said…because he wants to hear his thoughts expressed…

The response is I am glad you are concerned about Purgatory. The after life is a concern for every Christian…then you reframe the conversation this way…

Lets get back to Dispensationalism and this New Age belief. This will force him to react…you just called this belief New Age…he should sputter…New Age?

Well yeah…don’t you know the history of Eschatology…? What do you mean…

Well there are 4 systems of thought concerning Eschatology. The first would be Historic Premillinialism. This was an early form of thought when early Christians thought of Christ’s eminent return…this was condemned and then there is Amellinialism… and at the reformation there was Postmillinialism and in our time in this century Premillinialism has surfaced again…you know there is nothing new under the sun…

You would benefit from knowing all the Millinealists including the 7th Day Adventists…you can even as you speak…say…you’re not one of those 7th Day Adventists Millerites are you…you will hear a gasp.

You have just educated him in the history of eschatology and forced him to look at history. You have taken the conversation away from Purgatory which has nothing to do with dispensationalism…you are being attacked…and you now control the conversation and you keep the conversation on that topic…

If something else is brought up…then acknowledge it and its importance and then bring up…Dispensationalism you know was invented by Nelson Darby a Protestant in the Protestant Church of Ireland. He may not know he is a Protestant…if he says huh…you then take the conversation to Protestant thought and outline that…

keep control so he doesn’t beat you up…that is the only way to discuss this …👍

He who reframes the conversation controls the conversation…keep reframing the conversation and you will control it…🙂

If you are being beaten up then that is because you are not familiar with controlling the conversation.
