When my in-laws married, my MIL’s brother gave them a ceramic chalice and paten to use at their wedding. It’s my understanding that it’s not licit to use ceramic for the Eucharist (precious metal or gold is preferred/required), but at any rate, it was the 70s, that’s what happened. My MIL is no longer practicing (FIL is not and has never been Catholic) and since DH and I are, they gave us these items. The chalice is broken in two pieces (the stem broke off).
We don’t really wish to keep these. I don’t think they can be used for their intended purpose, so what would be the appropriate way to dispose of them, since they have in fact held the Eucharist?
