Hello!

A gent in the parish has this question; I figured someone here will certainly know the answer!

How do you dispose of a Papal Blessing? For instance, if your grandparents received a Papal Blessing for an anniversary, and the grandparents are long gone to God, and nobody knows what to do with the “certificate” anymore, what should they do?

Is this like other Sacramentals, which should be buried or burned?

Thanks for any advice!

God bless!

Why would you want to dispose of it? It is a wonderful memory. With so many people interested in geneology I would think that having something like this saved would be of interest to future generations of the family

My uncle was a priest and in Rome during the jubilee year 1950 and brought back a papal blessing and plenary indulgence for my parents and family. It is my possesion now and I would not think of disposing of it. It will go to my nephews and their famililies when I am gone. Whether or not the blessing passes to the next generation, I don’t know but I’m sure they will always honour it as a treasured possesion of their grandparents.

…composs heap in your garden, let it decompose with nature? Burn it with a prayer or burial. Do not put it in the trash!? 😃

Your point about genealogy is very good, Joannm. There seems to be an ever growing interest in tracing one’s ancestry. I wonder, SisterSnowflake, if this man really feels he has to let go of the papal blessing, if it might be worth asking the authorities of the church where the couple got married if they would be interested in having it. One never knows, it may be of use to someone years and years later to find out where their ancestors married and then to have an “artefact” from the occasion. Personally, though, I would not consider disposing of it. I would treasure it.

I can only echo what others have said, I personally would never dream of disposing of such a precious thing as this. I have two, one that my parenst received and one that my wife and I received. My kids have told me that when I pass, they want to keep them as well as family historical artifacts and priceless memories of bygone days.

I would wonder why someone would even consider disposing of such a thing.

I can’t resist the temptation to say this, see if you can get it renewed 😃

On more serious note, hold on to it. I’ve done a lot of genealogy research on my family and such a document would be a find of a lifetime and a great historical document and something to be treasured. 🙂

Do you have a scrapbooker in your family? She would be thrilled to have it, I’m sure. I would poll the other family members before disposing of it.

But then, I couldn’t even dispose of the left over programs from my wedding, and I’ve been divorced for 18 years.
