Disposing of Holy Water

How can I dispose of Holy water? Can I pour it on my house plants?

ABSOLUTELY!!! THAT is how I was taught to dispose of holy water by the deacon that led and taught our RCIA class. It would be a shame to pour a sacramental down a drain, right? A plant would benefit! Absolutely!!!

I am by no means an expert on home disposal, but if the holy water is not contaminated and is clearn, then you could take it back to Church and put it back in the holy water font or baptistery. If the holy water is dirty or contaminated, you could also take it back to the Church and pour it down the sacrarium.

Catholic Churches are supposed to have a sacrarium. This is a sink that drains directly to the crawl space under the Church Altar. If there is no crawl space, then the sacrarium should drain directly to the landscape area that is not subject to foot traffic. the sacrarium does not drain to the sanitary sewer.

As far as home disposal, you could set it out to evaporate in a pan. As far as pouring on your plants, it is my understanding that it should only be disposed of on consecrated ground.

Pour it on the plants (works better than
Miracle Grow ) or in an out of the way place into the ground.

As far as pouring on your plants, it is my understanding that it should only be disposed of on consecrated ground.

It is permitted to dispose of it by pouring it on a living plant or onto consecrated ground. Everyone I know chooses a plant, but one that is not subject to foot traffic.

My question is, why do you want to dispose of Holy Water? You can water your plants, but you can also sprinkle it around the house. Sorry, i don’t have the information with me, but do a search on the wonderful benefits of Holy Water. I believe that even the use of Holy Water absolves you of “minor sins”.

sometimes as the water evaporates, when the water gets low, theres a slight sludge at the bottom of the font or bowl or whatever you use. I have an alibaster st. michael font that hangs on my wall. as the water gets low, there’s a gooky sludge in there at the bottom, so I look for a plant to dump the last 20 or 30 drops & clean the font.
