I would just feel wrong throwing something with an image of Mary on it into the garbage. Any advice?

I would never throw such blessed item into the garbage. If you cannot fix it, put it in a nice box or bag and place it somewhere on your desk where you have other blessed item.

Others might have different ideas.

What I have read is that there are two acceptable ways to dispose of blessed objects: burn them or bury them.

I was at a scapular investiture once and the priest and a woman who had taught the class leading up to the event was very straight about telling us. Burn or bury them.

“That may be true,” the lady who taught us said (old, very traditional Catholic) “but my kids are going to find a box full of broken scapulars in my underwear drawer when I die.”
