Distracted Driving....Again

I know this topic is always covered but… I was in a municipal parking lot today and decided to pull out while on the phone with my Dad (trying to figure out where I was in proximity to his car) and I felt distracted and unfocused…my thought was: Don’t be scrupulous- you’re just using the phone for a sec…then, after pulling out without paying focused attention and driving about 30 feet, i realized how distracted and stupid i was being…i know it’s atleast venial but do you think I should refrain from communion until I see a priest? My guess is venial but I always find the gray area…Uggh…i wish there was a Sin-o-Meter site where you type in your sin and voila! But alas, only God and us know our hearts…

3 conditions for mortal sin: grave matter, full knowledge, full consent. Bring it up in Confession, if you want. I don’t see those conditions for mortal sin being met, unless you were like, “Yes, I know what I’m doing is dangerous but I don’t care, I’m going to do it, anyway”.
 
Let’s not make more out of this than it is. It was a dumb mistake. Learn from it, resolve to do better in the future, and try to stick to that resolution. At least no one got hurt. Say a prayer of thanksgiving for that.

Yes, actually…im really starting to meditate on the Divine Mercy image/devotion…i had an experience tonight that is really helping me to trust in the UNSTOPPABLE mercy of the Lord (his greatest attribute) !!! And to be more reasonable in my judgments regarding personal sin…Obviously, I’m still going to work on it😊 thx for your advice💙
 
Yes! Thx…i was concerned about mortal sin and I realize tonight I need to be more reasonable and less scrupulous regarding personal sin…im also starting to trust that the Mercy of God is his greatest attribute…thx for your thoughtful reply, Agatha!!! It seems you know the journey of scrupulosity too…i’ve started meditating on the Divine Mercy image and its meaning…I think the Lord is trying to teach me Trust:blue_heart:💙💙

If you suffer from scrupulosity, asking questions like this on CAF will do nothing but affirm your affliction. You need to be working with a priest or good spiritual director under the direction of your priest. No one on CAF can help cure your scrupulosity as they don’t know you and your story. Only a professional can help you.

Maybe you should limit your activity on CAF to responding to posts rather than asking questions.

This was an imprudent thing to do. Simply vow not to be on the phone while you drive. There are apps where one can earn $$ for NOT talking while driving!

I think most of the posters have given good recommendations about mortal vs venial sin.

I would recommend getting a hands free device for your car. Being distracted, not focused or your phone when driving 30 feet in a parking lot is spell for disaster. Driving in a parking lot requires more vigilance as you have mentioned. Children are notorious for taking off from parents in parking lots. Whilst one assumes that adult supervision of children in parking lots happen, this is not always the case. So as a driver we all need to be vigilant, free of distraction when driving in a parking lot.

Thanks so much…yes…i felt rushed and should have used much better judgment! I think I will most likely purchase a hands free for situations where I must use phone in car…thx again…

As someone who drives professionally for a living, I’m confident that distracted driving is mortally sinful. They place all of us at grave risk. I’ve seen SO MANY accidents and near accidents because of cell phones.
 
Hm, doesn’t look very useful for me, as I often use my phone as a GPS.
