Try as I might, I often find my mind wandering when I pray the Rosary.

(Today’s EWTN homily, about Theresa of Avila, made me smile; she addressed that very thing).

Am I the only one who has to keep reminding myself to concentrate?

Nope. Me too and I’m sure many others. Two things help me. One is to have an illustration to focus on for each mystery. Lots of prayer books have them and they are in the back of my Sunday missal also. Another is to really bring my intention for that decade/rosary to the front of my mind. If I can’t concentrate on the mystery, it is better for me to be thinking about my intention then just having my mind wander.

You are not alone with the problem of concentration. I find what helps for me is to focus on the specific mystery, and if I stray from that, I picture in my mind those I am praying for. You might have a holy card or statue to remind you to stay focused. Do you have a prayer book with the Mysteries of the Rosary in it? They often have discriptions of each mystery to help to meditate more effectively.

I like to pray the rosary with Mother Angelica on EWTN, but do not look at the TV because I am distracted at looking at the faces of nuns and not concentrating on the mysteries. I believe one can get this on DVD, so it might be something that might help.

Blessings

I either use the Magnificat Rosary Companion or I use a scriptural rosary. Both of those help tremendously. The Magnificat Rosary Companion has descriptions and pictures and the scriptural rosary helps me imagine it better.

Also, if you get the rosary CD by Fr. Benedict Groeschel, it is easy to pray with. He does such a good job explaining the mysteries. I use it in the car.

I have found “The Imitation of Christ” and the contemplative works of Thomas Merton to be quite helpful when it comes to distractions during the Rosary and other forms of prayer. The human mind is constantly bombarded with thoughts and images especially when we pray. Even the saints had to deal with distractions but, the way in which we deal with distractions is an entirely different matter. Some people become quite aggravated and even become spiritually upset at the amount and substance of the distractions, opting not to pray or to go thru emotional gyrations at some of the disturbing images that come to mind at a moment in which we want to focus on the intentions of our prayer. Realize at the moment that the “parade” of images and thoughts come spilling into your prayer time that you simply bypass them, allow them to pass by as insignificant “speed bumps” to be ignored. You must assume the attitude of a recovering addict, “quit and quit again”. And continue to pray, meditate, contemplate. You are not actively seeking these distractions and it is an opportunity to build-up your spiritual life. No one is completely free of distractions; real or percieved. All the Saints had them and learned to place them in their proper perspective and consequently became better at praying, meditating and contemplating. You may not always have the benefit of a prayer card or a holy image to help you and in fact while those things are helpful, they too bring a different set of distractions. Learn to ignore the parade of images and thoughts this will some day lead you to the prayer of quiet, the prayer of interior silence… even in the midst of the storm.
Pax Domini sit semper vobiscum.

This helps me to keep focused: www.virtualrosary.org. I still use my beads, but having the pictures and scripture passages makse it easier to keep my mind on my rosary and not my grocery list or whatever. 👍

This is one of the best things that has happened to me, going to that site!
I love praying the rosary using virtual rosary.
I find it helps my concentration a lot as well.

I’ve fallen asleep while saying the Rosary many times. I think maybe praying the Rosary in a Church or in front of the Blessed Sacrament may help. Just concentrate on Him in the Sacrament.

When falling asleep, I walk around in my house and pray. It helps me a lot.

*Hi Sailor Kenchin!

While praying the rosary I tend to do a bit of “wandering” as well… Not sure if it is distraction, or simply that age thing! Anyway, a dear friend suggested that when I am wandering, it is a good idea to gently go back to the prayer and meditation at hand while praying for the person or situation that got me wandering to begin with! 🙂 She told me that perhaps my Guardian Angel is nudging me - that prayers are needed for the subject of my wandering! It makes sense when I am reminded that Jesus wants to be a part of ALL areas my life!

I hope this helps!!
God Bless!
