If you look at old photos of women who are breastfeeding, it was actually very typical to “take out the whole breast.” Yes, even in generally more modest times when hem lengths were longer and necklines were higher! My babies have, in general, not tolerated fabric anywhere near their faces while they eat (I wouldn’t like it either!)
With this baby I’ve done a lot more pulling my top down, rather than wearing two shirts to lift up or wearing specific nursing shirts. Even then, “with my whole breast out,” unless you are staring at me trying to see something, you won’t see anything, and I’m not a small chested woman. My baby’s head covers it all. And yep, I’m mostly a skirt wearing, headcovering lady who finds myself at the TLM more often than not - and most of the ladies I know have the same approach.
I will say that for some moms and with some babies it can take time to figure it out. But good grief, they’re the ones with the trouble, and if you’ve got eyelids and a neck that can turn then you go ahead and use those muscles, because there is nothing stopping you.
