This is a typical fundamentalist tactic – erecting a strawman, and claiming that’s what Catholics believe – and then attacking their own strawman.

We simply believe that Mary is a saint. She is inHeaven. We venerate the saints, not worship them. And when we ask others to pray for us, we include the saints in those whom we ask.

What did you say to prompt this statement?! We believe what the Church teaches based on “feelings”? Im afraid that’s distinctly non-Catholic.

Nothing about feelings!

why are you sending emails to people about Mary if you’re not in a position to defend them?

This person I think used to be Catholic and since I don’t know mnuch about the faith and all that (c’mon peoples, I’ve started learning about it since December 2004!), that’s why I ask you guys because you guys DO KNOW your faith! On the other hand, I myself to to get my gears into place and start reading on my own so I wont have to always ask you guys! LOL!!!

But like I said, since this person was Catholic and left the faith, and said something “falsely” about Mary, I went to you guys so YOU guys could clear it up for me so I wont have a false impression of Mary myself!

Paris Blues:
Perhaps I should start reading the Cathechism and books on Mary before I start saying things what I THINK Catholics think. :banghead:
Yes, it’s a GREAT thing I wasn’t confirmed Saturday night…I am still ignorant of the Catholic faith! Ooops! Thank goodness for RCIA!!!😛

I told ya I was ignorant of religion!!! Didn’t I?:crying:
Paris,
Hear ya go! try “Mary, Christ’s Mother and Ours” It’s FREE!
amm.org/chss/chss.htm

Glad you came to us with it! You’ll do just fine. Hang in there. But get into that RCIA class in September. Meanwhile use the Catholic Home Study Service courses to get ready. Our RCIA teacher highly recommended them, which was great since I did 'em all! Woo-HOO!
We love ya little Sis!
Pax vobiscum, 🙂

Paris,

The recent topics you’ve posted about are really quite basic to the catholic faith.
If you are not well grounded in the truth concerning these teachings, you are in no position to properly respond to challenges from your protestant friends.

Before you engage in any more debates I’d like to suggest 3 books.

On the pope…Upon This Rock by Stephen K. Ray
Pope Fiction by Patrick Madrid

On Mary… Hail Holy Queen by Scott Hahn.

There’s a time for reading and learning, even discussing - and then there is a time for debate.
Be very careful about defending the Church’s position when you aren’t sure what the Church’s position is.

Paris,

I’ll echo what Church Militant said—you hang in there, and we love ya and are rootin’ for ya!

But what some of the posters here have said is quite right: don’t get bogged down in this stuff at this stage in your education. Defending the faith against anti-Catholics can be so discouraging, and can wear you down to a frazzle—and that’s true for people who know their faith pretty well! It’s especially discouraging when you’ve taken a lot of time to explain yourself carefully, only to have the person level the same dumb charge as if you hadn’t said a darn thing—this happens a LOT.

If you feel the need to answer, you can reduce some of your hassle by simply giving them links to Catholic Answers articles at catholic.com. That will save you a lot of time typing, and since the site covers most of the usual anti-Catholic arguments (trust me, none of this is new) you’re covered. They may not choose to follow the link, but then the ball’s in their court.

Consider this, because I think it goes to the root of the Mary-phobia some non-Catholics exhibit. I think the fundamental question is, do we or do we not worship Mary (discussion about the different meanings of “worship” left for another time)? Catholics admit for all the world to hear, that we worship God, that we worship Jesus. At the same time, we declare over and over that we don’t worship Mary. Notice that we never declare that we don’t worship God, or that we don’t worship Jesus. Now, if we really did worship Mary, would we deny it? Wouldn’t that lead to our death and destruction, if we really thought Mary was deserving of worship, and then we denied it? It makes no sense that we would (A) really worship Mary, and at the same time (B) deny it, over and over and over. Who ever heard of any person, of any religious persuasion, behaving in such a contradictory way? Who ever heard of any religion teaching such a contradiction? When you consider the implications if Catholics really did worship Mary and at the same time denied it, the silliness of the whole charge against us should become clear.

I hope it’s okay that one of CA’s local Protestants chimes on on this obviously Catholic issue. (i really should change my religion on my profile to “Cathlastant” winks at CM).

But I agree that you should concentrate on nailing the basics. I wish for your sake that everyone would just back off of you and give you room to breathe and to learn, but unfortunately that probably won’t be the case. Giving links is a great idea and CA (both the forums and the homepage links are a great resource. If they’re really interested, they’ll read it. If not, that probably just means they’re not interested in true Catholicism, and only interested in trying to drag you away.

You seem to be a fun and enthusiastic gal. If you keep at it you’ll probably make a good apologist one day - but take it slow. One thing that’s making my own studies of Catholicism so long and drawn out is that it is so OLD - there is SO MUCH to wade though. Nail those basics. Then, move on to something deeper. In the meantime, when fundies attack, pretend you’ve suddenly gone deaf. 😃 Just kiddin.

Hang in there.

In “Jeremiah”, there was the false goddess Queen of heaven, just as there are other false gods mentioned in the Bible.

This does NOT mean that there is not a true Queen of heaven,. just as this does not prove that there is not a True God.

In short, throwing out the true Queen of heaven, with the false, would be the same logic as throwing out the True God with the false.

When one knows Who is The King, then one knows who His mother is.
