I started a graveyard shift at a local corner-store. They sell food, newspapers and many other harmless things. They also sell pornographic magazines and condoms, but I thought of that too late after being employed. I believe I should quit for selling any such material goes against the moral law. Your thoughts would be appreciated.

P.S - I am a new Catholic (2006 Easter Vigil). GB!

My daughter-in-law is not Catholic, but she is Christian. When she first got out of college and was broke, she and my stepson (who were engaged at the time) wanted to live near each other, but not together, so she desperately needed money to get a 2nd apartment. She took a job at a convenience store, but soon quit for the very same reasons. Fortunately she was able to find a job that she felt good about. I definitely respect her for doing that. I know it’s hard, but if you feel strongly about something that it isn’t right, than you should listen to your gut instinct. Good luck with your decision.

PS. Congratulations on becoming a Catholic! 👍

There are lots of questions one has to consider in such circumstances. Is this your only source of income? Are others dependent upon you for this income? If you were to quit tomorrow, would you risk becoming homeless? If the answer to any of these questions and similar ones is “yes”, then your first obligation is to make sure you can properly provide for yourself and others who depend on you.

Then, as the other poster said, it would be a good idea to find another job, if that is possible. In this day and age I would imagine you could find a different job pretty quickly that would not pose these moral problems for you.

Thank you for your responses, they are most helpful. I am going down this afternoon to inform the manager of my decision. Thankfully they have someone else working the night shift today. GB!

This is a difficult decision, and I admire you desire and resolve to do the right thing.

Porn is the worst scourge. It is addictive and turns convinces men that women are nothing but object for their own personal pleasure. And it leads some men to take the next step, if women are just objects, that they are not people. That is the first step in mentally justifying date rape.

It’s a double-edged sword…(and let’s keep the scourge of porn & condoms argument out of the question at hand - it is the entire reason for the post)

YOU are not:
1 - buying it/them
2 - providing it/them
3 - promoting it/them

The store owner is asking you as a part of your tasks/job description to:
1 - take the money
2 - tolerate it/them being on the shelves
3 - not make your personal convictions audible, and just do your job.

So… it comes back to you… can you work there and accept the requirements, or do you need to find another source of income.

If it disturbs you morally, you should try to seek out other work. Call upon St Joseph (patron saint of workers) to pray for direction in the matter. Welcome to the faith, friend!:harp:

If more people would hold to their moral beliefs then there would be many GOOD examples of right and wrong out there. Sometimes we say alot by using our feet along with our mouths to make a moral point.

Society says all things are relative. But morality is set in black and white not gray IMHO.

I am a catholic woman who works in a prison, I thought you might like to know a little about the law that protects our freedom of religion.

A while back I worked in a special management unit at my complex. I was placed on our death row. As I am against the death penalty I wrote to my warden about my problem. At first I was penalized because of my beliefs then I got smart and notified our eeo (equal oppertunity laison) Well long story short. even though I signed a form saying that I would uphold the laws of my state the state and my supervisors could not break the federal law saying I had a right to my religion and it was a violation of my religion to have anything to do with an execution.

check with the state equal oppertunity department for your state to find out what your rights are.

Praying for you. Hold strong as Jesus did.

Quit.

Ask the manager if you can work but not sell things you don’t approve of. Say it’s a religious issue with you and explain more if you need to or have time to. If you caan’t, I say find another job, then leave this one. If you have to get unemployment, tell them you lost your job for religious reasons. Maybe you can get unemployment if you say so. It would be true, and it is a religious rights issue. Follow your conscience.

I’d say this is over-scrupulous, but don’t take my word for it!
