Dear Friends,

Thanks for praying for me last night.

Tonight I have been seeing images behind my eyelids which seem designed to grab my attention, and I think it would be bad for me if that happened.

Please ask St. Anthony the Great and St. Elijah to intercede for me and my brother.

Thank you all again!

St. Anthony the Great and St. Elijah,
please intercede to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ
for Ben and his brother. Dear Lord, may Ben and
his brother be shielded from all unpleasant images. Give
them both Your love and protection. We ask this
through Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with
the Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God,
for ever and ever. Amen.

Prayer for Peace of Mind

Fortify me with the grace of Your Holy Spirit,
and give Your peace to my soul
that I may be free from all needless anxiety,
solicitude, and worry. Help me to desire always
that which is pleasing and acceptable
to You so that Your will may be my will.
Through Christ Our Lord, amen.
– St. Frances Xavier Cabrini

Our Father who art in heaven
Hallowed be your name
Your kingdom come
Your will be done
On earth as it is in heaven
Give us this day our daily bread
and forgive us our trespasses
As we forgive those who trespass against us
Lead us not into temptation
But deliver us from evil
Amen

I liked the first prayer, so I decided to pray it. May peace be with you!

Saint Michael, the archangel, defend us in battle, be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil, may God rebuke him, we humbly pray. And do you, O’ Prince of the Heavenly host, by the power of God thrust into Hell Satan and all the other evil spirits who prowl about the world for the ruin of souls.

Amen.

Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Amen.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.

Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.

Amen.

Prayer for a Miracle

God of all creation, you who spoke a simple command and brought forth light from
the darkness, I ask you now to send forth your miracle-working power to heal (Ben Shipman). You cleansed the lepers, opened the eyes of the blind and by
speaking a simple command, you empowered the crippled to rise up and walk.
You sent forth your life-giving power to all those in need, including those you raised from
the dead. I ask you to send forth your healing power into Ben Shipman’s body and give him the strength to fight his illness. I ask this through my Lord, Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen

For Help in Trials

Most holy apostle St. Jude, faithful servant and friend of Jesus, the name of the traitor who delivered your beloved Master into the hands of His enemies has caused you to be forgotten by many. But the Church honors and invokes you universally as the patron of hopeless cases–of things despaired of. Pray for me who feels so hopeless. Make use, I implore you, of that particular privilege accorded to you of bringing visible and speedy help where help is almost despaired of. Come to my assistance in this great need, that I may receive the consolations and succor of heaven in all my necessities, tribulations and sufferings, in particular (Ben Shipman), and that I may bless God with you and all the elect throughout eternity. I promise you, O Blessed St. Jude, to be ever mindful of this great favor, and I will never cease to honor you as my special and powerful patron, and to do all in my power to encourage devotion to you. Amen.

Prayer for Protection

Watch, O Lord, with those who wake, or watch, or weep tonight, and give Your angels and saints charge over those who sleep.
Tend Your sick ones, O Lord Christ.
Rest Your weary ones.
Bless Your dying ones.
Soothe Your suffering ones.
Pity Your afflicted ones.
Shield Your joyous ones, and all for Your love’s sake. Amen.

~ St. Augustine

If any disturbing images come to mind, just think of your mind as a stream. Think of the bad images or ideas as dirty twigs and dead leaves that have floated into your mind. Don’t pick them up and look at them; just let them float out again. They are nothing.

You know, you might find it useful to pray the before-bed prayers of the Liturgy of the Hours, because they are very relaxing and comforting.

Here is one of the ancient hymns of the Church that is used for Compline during Ordinary Time. You can recite it as a prayer or sing it as a song. You can also use different tunes that you know. Here’s an older setting by Thomas Tallis, turning chant into polyphony.

Te Lucis Ante Terminum

O Thee, before the close of day
Creator of the world, we pray
that with Thy wonted favor, Thou
wouldst be our Guard and Keeper now.

From all ill dreams defend our eyes,
from nightly fears and fantasies:
tread under foot our ghostly foe,
that no pollution we may know.

O Father, that we ask be done
through Jesus Christ Thine only Son,
who, with the Holy Ghost and Thee,
shall live and reign eternally.
Amen.

The Nunc Dimittis (“Lord, Now Let Your Servant Go in Peace”) from the Gospel of Luke is also part of Compline, transferring St. Simeon’s prophecy to the more mundane idea of going off to bed! It is joined to an ancient antiphon praying for the Lord to guard us while we sleep and keep us while we are awake. Here’s a chant version with all the lyrics.

So you see that you are not the only person in the world to have trouble at bedtime, and like a mother, the Church is thinking of you. Monks and nuns and laypeople have been praying for you every night, whether or not you knew it. You can join with them, and pray for them and for yourself. Hope this helps.
