Hello ya’ll! I’m a new catholic and I keep hearing about the divine mercy novena. How is everyone in the know about these novenas and how are I suppose to follow it? What are the rules and guidelines, if you will, I just want to be a faithful daughter of God! We sing the divine mercy chaplet song everynight before bed, does that count?

The Divine Mercy Novena begins on Good Friday and ends tomorrow, in preparation for Mercy Sunday. You don’t have to do the Novena to obtain all the marvelous graces offered on Divine Mercy Sunday, but many of us do. In fact, I make a perpetual Divine Mercy Novena (that is, say the prayers every day as part of my regular prayer).
How do Catholics know about novenas? Well, there are a zillion of them, and we gravitate toward those we find best correspond with our spirituality, or if we are petitioning for a favor. Some major ones are The Litany of the Sacred Heart (culminating on the feast day), the Litany of the Holy Spirit (culminating on Pentecost), the Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary. You can check online for a book or website with novenas.

Many churches have a Divine Mercy prayer service on Divine Mercy Sunday, which is always the Sunday after Easter, and a couple weeks before that Sunday they will publicize the novena in their bulletins or with a note or video on their website or social media page. The novena always starts on Good Friday.

In addition, many of us follow one or more Catholic social media pages and they typically have posts reminding us about the Divine Mercy novena.

There are probably hundreds or thousands of novenas but most of them aren’t as popular as the Divine Mercy novena. There’s a handful of popular ones like Divine Mercy Novena, Miraculous Medal Novena, Our Mother of Perpetual Help Novena, St. Andrew Christmas Novena, Novena to St. Jude, 54 day Rosary Novena, that a lot of people do. Many of the others are just for devotees of a particular saint or a particular title of Mary.
